HELP! son's Camaro does not always start

his 2011 v6 3.6L recently has had issues starting. I replaced the battery after it wouldn't start up at his school. It started right up. I took the "old" battery to be tested and it still good with plenty of cranking volts. Next day the car would not start on first key turn. All the lights, wipers, horn worked fine. Tried again and it started. I'm thinking the starter or ignition..? Could it be the starter relay or solenoid? We need some help in troubleshooting - Thank you

Some basic info... is it a crank but no start, or it doesn't crank at all when key is turned to start ?

Take it to a local auto parts store and have them test the starter on it. It’s getting cold and that can put added stress on the starter and possibly send it over the edge.

This video should be helpful for you.

One tip is if you’re ever in a pinch and your starter doesn’t work, you can lightly tap it and see if it’ll start but it’s not a guarantee.

Take care, hopefully your son can have his sweet ride back!

Good tip !. But I’d say if you tap the starter then it starts well then I’d say you found the culprit . Either starter motor going bad or is bad electrical connection ..

The issue started recently. I just went out and started his car with no issue. This morning he had the same no start problem 2 times then turned the key a 3rd time and went off to school. Started for him 1st turn after practice.

Just to double check have you verified this battery sits at or above 12 volts when it’s sitting? Something to check to make sure all ducks are in a row. Wouldn’t suspect it however if you’re not hearing any clicking on start up.

Battery is New. I was also told that the battery that I replaced is also still good. Shop manager “this battery will start a semi”.

A normal battery at 11.7 would be considered toast. Anything below 12.5 is already on its way out. Either that, or something is drawing down the battery while it is sitting.

You are going to have to start tracking voltages through the system. I would start at the starter solenoid and see if you are getting voltage there when trying to start it. Of course an intermittent electrical problem can be a real pain to track down.

Look at the starter and the connection to it and ground.

I had a bad positive battery cable on another car that did that exact same thing. Sometimes started fine, sometimes nothing.
