On the same subject of gas prices, I recently came back from overseas and the price for regular gas in France was $8.00 per gallon, and for high test it was over $9.00 per gallon. While we feel like we are paying a lot, there are other countries where it is very expensive to drive anything but a Fiat 500 or Smartcar. We have it pretty good in comparison.
Good point, but those countries (cities) have really good public transportation systems in place unlike most cities in the US. Gas in those countries is heavily taxed because of the reliable public transportation systems available to use.

100% true.

If you live in the suburbs you're even more out of luck. There are so many places in the suburbs that don't have bus stops for miles apart and if a bus does stop, it'll be once every hour or more sometimes. It's not so bad to commute in the city, but subways are much dirtier here than what I've seen in western Europe for the most part.

I agree with you that the subways here are much dirtier as the Paris subways were very clean compared to NYC, and the trains came to the station on average every three minutes.

You are correct with regards to being out in the suburbs and not having as many train or bus stops. Even with the great public transportation there were too many cars on the road as we all seem to like our independence, and they have horrible rush hours. Makes LA's seem tame by comparison.

Cold fusion is the answer, but it would suck with a head on as you would have to close a portion of the freeway for about 100 years.

Gas prices have no bearing on our decision to not go to the event. Decision came solely on distance between here and there. Maybe next year?

Agreed. The gas prices don't make a difference, the only way I would make the trip would be by plane because it's on the other side of the country and that's just no fun without my car, so nope, maybe next year if they do it closer to Florida.

Gas Map of US

I thought this might be interesting. You can see that the state and county governments have at least 20% say the price of gas. Can't blame it all on world markets.

I read somewhere that Canada and the US are the only oil producng nations in the world that pay more than $1 for their gas. It's rediculous.
