check engine light rough idle

The check engine light is on and it has a slightly rough idle. I have not had the diagnosis codes checked. Any idea what the problem could be?

It could be anything. Just read the code and go from there

my local auto parts store diagnosis code reader said P044 small emissions leak. Any one have any ideas of what to look for? The car acts like it has a small vacuum leak.

After doing some searching. I think i have a bad charcoal canister purge valve? I don't think it is the gas cap. It is very clean and the car only has 8,000 miles on it. After reading some about the EVAP system, I am concerned that i may have fouled my plugs? When the purge valve is bad, it can allow excess gas into the engine. This is one big reason I think that is my problem because the engine idles rough, has low power from idle and the exhaust tips have heavy black soot. Am I thinking right?

If the purge valve is stuck open, that allows fuel vapor to get fed into the intake manifold at idle, which it is not supposed to do. This could definitely be causing your issue. Unless you're seeing black smoke rolling out of the exhaust, I wouldn't be concerned about fouled spark plugs.

You can prove that this is the issue by pinching off the line between the purge valve and the intake manifold. If you close off the line and the idle is still rough, something else is causing it. If the idle smooths out, disconnect the electrical connector on the purge valve and remove the pinch from the line. If the valve itself is faulty, then the problem will come back. If it doesn't, then there is something wrong with the PCM, or for whatever reason, it is commanding the valve on when it shouldn't.
