Valve/head repair and parts recommendations

I thought I had asked this on here already but I guess not...

I was curious about the valve/head repair. I know its not necessary for all LS7s, at least if the head manufacturer's machine was at fault as GM claims, but I kind of want to tighten things up in there just to play it safe, as this is both my toy and my daily driver. So, I'm curious what I actually need for that. I found a "kit" with the parts on the katech site (but not sure if its overkill), but it is 5k, which seems extremely high, given that I can get a new set of heads for half that price or less. Will the parts alone to correct that really run that high in cost? If so, then will just swapping the heads (with aftermarket for example) take care of the problem?

Side note:
Looking for head and cam recommendations. This will still be my daily, so drivability and reliability is a must...looking for the biggest bang for my buck. I've got 6 kids so may piecemeal this together as well over time.

Overall my plan is:
1. LTs/headers
2. Ported intake manifold (MSD or LSX)
3. Heads
4. Cam
5. Larger throttle body

This is the package you're referencing? The $4,500 is machine work/time of your heads for the guides being replaces, parts, and installation pricing with 3yr/36k mi warranty included.
https://store.katechengines.com/ls7-...kage-p732.aspx

Are you looking to do the work yourself (having the skill set to do so) or have a shop do it? That's the question if the pricing as 'extremely high' as you put it.

There are no aftermarket heads that could just be bolted-on without tuning. All aftermarket heads are performance upgrades or at least variation from the stock units. Tuning would be needed at least. Plus all the miscellaneous parts that needed and assembled with the heads.

If the list you end is what want then this may be your best bet if you're shopping Katech. Again, parts and installation pricing with 3yr/36k mi warranty included.

Shops were recently discussed here too:

Yea I expect to have to tune afterwards for sure. I don't necessarily want to just rebuild the stock heads to fix the problem without making some gains at the same time
Yes that is the package though, and I would end up having someone else doing it. I could probably do it, but I don't have the time, ability to tune for it, etc...makes me wish old school rides

I'm most definitely not limiting myself to katech btw; I just ran across their package for the fix is all

Side note:

I have having a pita time trying to find ceramic coated headers; has anyone run across any for the Z/28? I can find them all day for SS and ZL1, but can't find any already coated for the Z/28.

That's the backup plan for me, but I have no clue where to get it done around me, and I'm hoping to avoid having to take some somewhere. I've got no time! lol

I'm in the same boat. I'm dropping mine off this weekend to get the 650hp package from 21st Century (only because I can't afford to do the 675 yet). I priced parts out and to get anywhere near what they can do, it would cost the same if not more in parts and I'm not about that. like mentioned above, if you do aftermarket heads then you have a bunch of other stuff to add/replace and I'm all about maximizing the efficiency.

I do my own work in almost all cases, but time (FT work AND school), plus the $$ as mentioned has me giving it to a shop that will give me a warranty and get it done in 5 days.. Not to mention their rep as a leading LS7 shop in DFW speaks for itself. I'm very comfortable with my choice.

As for the ceramic coated headers, I have zero recommendation for your area. I have a buddy here who does amazing powder and ceramic work, but that would require you shipping to and from. You may have to do that anyway, but just throwing that out there.

Hi

Swain Tech is probably the best option for ceramic coating - they are not cheap and you will have to ship to them.

Exhaust Link: http://swaintech.com/race-coatings/r...aust-coatings/

Good luck - looks like a great project!

I talked with kooks; they will apply their jet hot ceramic coating on any headers ordered What's odd is if you search their site on our model, the coating doesnt come up, but you can find it directly.

We believe we have the best LS7 head fix available to date with data to support it.

https://store.katechengines.com/ls7-...kage-p732.aspx

It includes a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty.

You guys HAVE to say that Btw, I've actually lived in the one horse township you guys are based in (I was born down the road in Tecumseh too)
Your products are on my short list, but I'm in Florida nowadays, and going up there for installation just isn't an option. Do you guys have a parts only price for it?

Same question of the stage 2 setup...

I would have to talk to sales to get a parts-only cost on the cylinder head services. (KAT-A7232 is the same package but with titanium exhaust valves)

https://store.katechengines.com/cnc-...lves-p661.aspx

This is the individual package for our LS7 head fix. You would essentially just add this to your cart, and then add the valvetrain package. (K501 Cam Kit KAT-A7046). You'd add /S-ASSEMBLE-CYL-LS to get the heads assembled while they are here

https://store.katechengines.com/k501-cam-kit-p609.aspx

Combined, these 3 items are $5473.51 MSRP. This cost is excluding the Fast intake, 102mm throttlebody, ARP head bolts, gaskets, and 160 thermostat. That would essentially be the Stage 2 package that we offer.

You can contact jason@katechengines.com for exact pricing/quotes as my numbers are just through the website.
