2018 ZL1 1LE Drag Launch

Hi Guys,

I just purchased not to long ago a stock 2018 ZL1 1LE with a 6 speed and has stock tires.

I am going to the drag strip on friday with some buddies and was wondering the best practices for getting a great launch.

Any feedback on whats working well would be appreciated.

Thank you

Get familiar with the Launch Control feature. It's very helpful with the manual transmission. Here are a few videos of me using it on my car.

and

Also get familiar with the No-Lift-Shift feature. Here's a vid of a launch and a no-lift 1-2 shift.

Takes a while to get used to NOT lifting your foot off the gas while clutching and shifting.

I don't recommend using PTM (in any mode) alone/by itself without Launch Control enabled because wheel slip is shut down by PTM alone so the car will bog hard six feet into your launch. You will need to be in either Competitive Driving Mode or PTM to be able to engage launch control though.

All systems off will require good right-foot throttle control; consider Competitive Driving Mode if you want full power instead of the car managing the traction because it's a bit safer than "all nannies off" as it will allow 100% power but will try to prevent a spin-out by selectively braking a wheel as required... Also be aware that there is a manual setting to alter the launch RPM and allowable tire-slip of Launch Control.

Run about 26 PSI in the rear tires.

You will need to make sure those tires are nice and warm. So a good 5 sec burnout should do it. If they aren't up to operating temp, they won't grip too well.

The tires and the ZL1 1LE are made for a road course, not a drag strip. Remember that. The stiff suspension doesn't work well in launching the ZL1 1LE.

I would advice against launch control. It sucks in our car, unless the M6 launch control works better than the A10. I'd say, try both and see what works best.

Best practice would be to hit up road courses since you bought a road course car.

Nailed it; wrong car for what you're wanting it to do.

This is sound advice.

your launch is going to be very poor, the tires dont even begin to grip until they are hot and a burnout most likely isnt going to heat up the tire through enough to maintain the heat through the lights.

if you have tire warmers or its 90 degrees outside where you are at you are good.

hopefully they will put some adhesive on the track for you.

I don't understand why so many people buy 1LE's and want to race them on the drag strip or street. That is NOT what the 1LE package is made for and makes the car perform worse under that type of racing.

LOL, how dare you want to drag race your track car. Unacceptable! If you do dare do it without permission, you better not have fun!

OP asked a simple question and he wants to enjoy his time with his buds at the dragstrip, I'm not sure he needs to be lectured on what the car he bought is made for. We don't even know if he cares if it does worse than a "normal" ZL1

Perhaps a good smoky burnout will give him a better launch, at the cost of some tread.

Thank you

1. Lower the cold air pressure down to 26 psi.
2. Drive around the the water box, then back into it, do a 3-5 second burnout.

3. Pull up to the lights as soon as possible and hope someone in the opposite lane doesn't decide to make a sandwich.

4. Leave at an rpm slightly above idle and slip out the clutch (don't side step it).
5. Don't get frustrated if your 60' times suck and your mph sucks.

Love this point number five of yours... I sure had my fair share of launch frustration over my street tires at the dragstrip (1.8 is my best 60'), so I can already relate to OP

Personal experience on ZLE w pilot sports. Launching sucks. Wheel hop is always there, throttle out wont fix it either. No lift shift into second sometimes tosses rear end sideways - be ready to correct and let off the throttle and try again next run unless you want to hero mode and run 13's into the wall.

If you get launch OK.. rest is cake. Get there early, get in as many runs as you can. Launch mode.. practice somewhere deserted - never got it to work worth a lick.
