Cam installation

About to Buy a cam just curious on the difficulty of installing the cam as I have never done this before. I prefer working on my car myself but not sure about doing the cam install myself, would hate to not get it right. So my question is is this a difficult install or can a novice do a cam install? I know we all have to start somewhere and the easy mods are no problem just need some advice on difficulty.

There is a pretty good diy here on it....do a search.

Still, if you have to ask how hard it is, you should at least get someone to help you who knows what he's doing because if you mess something up it could be an expensive mistake.

I did my cam swap off Robertways DIY in the DIY section. Other than the cam swap, the most extensive install were headers. As long as you feel comfortable after reading his write up I'd say give it a shot. If you have patience and the right tools, it shouldn't be too bad. Definitely get a second hand. It helps when you get frustrated and prevents the verbal abuse to your car.

Good luck putting the oil pump back on and getting the pick-up tube aligned right. That part had me wanting to put a hole in the wall.

Do it. Take your time and have plenty of containers and baggies to label. Give yourself a full weekend so to not be rushed and in case you run into something.

+1 on taking pictures just before disassembling something and bagging the bolts and parts.

Take your time and get the right torque specs on the items like cam sprocket bolts, timing cover bolts, oil pump bolts etc etc. I'd say the hardest part to remove and install is the damn crank pulley ( please please buy the longer bolt to reinstall the crank pulley from rpmspeed it's only a couple of bucks but worth it, if not you'll strip the beginning threads on your crank). Other than that you'll be happy you did it yourself and proud to say your ride is built not bought! Lol you can also post up here for questions and I'll subscribe to lend a hand online at least lol. Good luck bud

Here are your torque specs:
http://www.ls1howto.com/index.php?category=1
but I believe they are listed in the DIY.

Also, I used tape to label the connections, parts, etc. I also wrote the torque specs on the bags that held the parts so it sped things up when I went to put things back together.

Thanks for all the input. After reviewing the write up I think I will do it myself. I will probably get the cam this coming week and either do this next weekend if I dont go to the track or the following. Thanks again for all the input.

Awesome! Go into it thinking your going to have some fun and get to know your car better. Like a hot date that you know is going to give it up and allow you to stab her with your cam! It just takes some time to undress her that's all lol.

Ps upgrade while your there, c5r timing chain, melling oil pump, arp cam bolts, arp crank bolt and arp head bolts not head studs. If you get these you can reuse them many times and torquing them down is easier than doing the Gm torque to yield bolts that are good for one time only.
