Catch Can proof

I have had a ADD W1 catchcan installed for about 1500 miles and I've got 13,800miles total on the car. I have been collecting about 2-3 ounces of oil every 200-300 miles. I am running the new 0w-40 Mobile 1 and expected less oil evaporation. To be fair, I have been driving kind of hard, but needless to say I am glad I have a can after seeing what I am collecting.

When I added the can, I flushed the intake with the CRC-DI cleaner. I did this To get a fresh start so I could keep track of the catchcans effectiveness. There has been many debates as to whether or not one is needed. I have had DI equipped vehicles since 2014 and learned about the valve coking phenomenon from a tech at GM. I have also been ASE certified and have an educational background in auto technology. I can assure you the problem is real. This is not an endorsement for catchcans but I just wanted to add my two cents to the debate.

My Silverado also has a catch can, but from Elite Engineering. The reason I decided to add one was because of what I saw when I removed the intake at 20K miles. The entire intake manifold and intake runners were coated in oil and there was carbon buildup on the back of the valves. I setup a cheap walnut blasting system and cleaned them off then added the can. It was very messy. Now I have 85K miles and will soon take the intake off and see how bad the valves are. I have not had the catch can on the truck the entire time, so I expect some carbon buildup.

Now back to the Camaro. This morning I took the intake off as I was curious how bad it was. I also wanted to make sure the valves were clean enough and get a few pics to compare later. There was oil coating everything and light carbon buildup on the valves. I did a manual cleaning and put everything back together. The way I cleaned it was by using the CRC-DI to soak the valve while it was closed. I then used a toothbrush and scrubbed the larger pieces off the valves. I used compressed air and a rag to blow the liquid out the runner. It worked well. I then sprayed a light coat of CRC-DI and just left it there. I put everything back together then fired it up.

I intend to drive about 30K, which will take some time, then take the intake back off and see what I've got. With that being said if you choose to do nothing you car will probably still run fine, and if its a daily driver you may not even notice any drivability issues. But the facts are you will eventually loose efficiency and a little power, however like I said before its subjective whether you will actually notice. If you have any experiences, thoughts, comments or questions feel free to post.

Wow! That sounds like a crazy amount for only 2-300 miles! That comes to about a quart about every 3k miles, so that alone would cause you to be 2qts low at normal oil change interval (~6k miles).

Had a little condensation mixed in with it plus a lot of WOT, downshifting and rev matching I am guessing is the reason. Usually if I drive normal there is less than half of that in the can.

I get about an ounce every 1000-1200 miles. The cumulative effect over the time I've had it on ( installed it when the car had 900 miles on it ) would be over 12 ounces of oil that didn't coat the intake tract.

Ive got about 137000 miles on mine - no catch can despite being tempted. It runs strong and steady - but I am curious what it will look like when it gets taken apart.

The LT1 engine is going into its sixth year of production. Has anyone posted pictures showing serious valve coking? Vette or Camaro sites .

Only people that sell the catch cans offer "proof"

I had a can on my ZL1 2013. after 5000 mile oil change I had maybe 5 Drops of oil in the can after spirited driving. If your pushing that much oil you have a problem......

This is what my intake valves looked like when I pulled my motor apart at 16K miles. Not bad, but 16K isn't a lot of miles. I installed a catch can when I put everything back together. I've maybe captured a couple of cc of oil, about 1/8 of an inch in the bottom of my JLT can in 3500 miles of very spirited driving - NMC road course and multiple 1/4 mile passes in addition to a couple of trips to the mountains
