LT6 5.5L DOHC for Z28? GM Authority

Note that the test mule did not have the taller LT5 sticking out of the LT4 hood.

Naturally aspirated? Yes. DOHC 32V screamer.

More Z28 than the LT5 really.

It's down to LT5 or LT6.

Quote:
The 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and the ZL1 1LE are far from the stopping point in the pursuit of performance.

That sentiment comes straight from Camaro chief engineer Al Oppenheiser, according to a new Hagerty interview published on Monday.

Recent spy shots showed what could be a very early Camaro Z/28 test mule. The car featured ZL1 1LE appearances, lacked the rear spoiler, but also wore carbon-ceramic brakes.

Prior to the photos, a 2017 report claimed a new 5.5-liter DOHC small-block V8 engine would grace the sixth-generation Camaro Z/28. At the time, it was pure rumor.

Now, the evidence is piling up.

The mid-engine C8 Corvette is also rumored to introduce two new DOHC V8 engines, and one of them will reportedly displace 5.5-liters, the same displacement rumored for the Camaro Z/28.

Of course, we could also see the 2019 C7 Corvette ZR1‘s 6.2-liter LT5 V8 engine find its way to the Camaro, but that seems more suited for something other than a Z/28 since the engine boasts forced induction.

Oppenheiser made it clear that his team is looking all around to stay at the top of the muscle car segment and said “we’re looking at any available horsepower that will fit in the car.” He called it “a very vague way of saying we’re still playing.” We’ll just have to stay tuned.

I posted this link in another thread and it seems they have been talking about this LT-6 idea for more than a year now. My money is on a 5.5 LT-6 with 700 HP and of course NA.

Will it be enough for me to trade my 680HP Z/28 for? Depends on what new suspension tricks they have up their sleeve and price point. They won't be able to pull that $76K trick like last time and then dump the price $20K later.

They will also need to market this new Z better than last time with some advertising. Of course that may come by setting a track record at Nuremberg.

The previous Z/28 actually weighs slightly less than the current ZL1-1LE....and the about 100lbs less than the current ZL1. To get to the 7 min mark, or even under that, you aren't doing it with a curb weight anywhere near 3700lbs and 550hp...

"“I think they’ve got a lot to catch up on. They haven’t had anything for a while. I think our SS 1LE pretty much put the GT350R in second place, all around,” Oppenheiser said.

The Camaro chief made similar comments at the 2017 Camaro SS 1LE’s debut at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show. During an interview with GM Authority, Oppenheiser was confident the track package would outgun Ford’s Shelby GT350. To his credit, he was correct.

2018 Chevrolet Camaro V6 LT 1LE left and SS 1LE Coupe right

He also added the Camaro team’s goal over the past two generations of the car has been to show that it’s not just about horsepower.

“We’ve shown in two generations it’s not only about horsepower, it’s ‘can you get that horsepower to turn?'”

Despite the ever-so-slight diss at his rival, Oppenheiser welcomes the continued battle and added it keeps the segment relevant. He said the Camaro team will be more than ready to tackle whatever Ford brings to the table and he has no plans to stop.

The Camaro’s future will include a refreshed car altogether this year and Oppenheiser even hinted at the possibility of a drag package, or even a factory Dodge Demon rival."

If Al is being this confident, something big is about to come from GM.

Drag packs, Lap ringers, and a killer low-end lineup... I'm excited.

Maybe, with the price of the mid engine Vette moving up, it allows room for the price of the halo Camaro to move up as well. The multi million dollar question becomes; is there a market for it?

I bought mine used with 591 miles with the Vengeance package already installed, so I didn't get hooked like a lot of others.

IMO, no way in hell they are getting 700 hp out of an NA 5.5L

Look what Ford had to do to get 526 out of 5.2L

The LS7 had 505HP

The viper and its 8.4L made 640HP

Would a DOHC V8 even fit in the Camaro?

Yes it fits with room to spare,
600 I could possibly see, but 700 not a chance.

Maybe they'll copy the Pcars and have both a Z/28 and a ZL1 1LE a la 911 GT3 RS and GT2 RS.
