2012 5.0 to 2015 SS 1LE

Hey guys, new forum user!

I am a new 2015 Camaro SS 1LE owner, I came from a 2012 Mustang GT Premium 5.0. I would like to start with the 5.0

The mustang has a great motor, the responsiveness of the 5.0 is amazing, as soon as you touch the throttle it wants to just go thanks to that DOHC. Now that is the only good thing about the mustang... The rest of the car is just average, the interior is pretty nice, the layout and design, but the quality is mediocre at best, buttons peal, crappy plastic, things rattling and coming loose etc. now the transmission... Well it sucks really bad, it is the manual 6 speed from GETRAG that is made in China, it's locks out at high rpm and will not go in gear. I had it replaced under warranty at 30,000miles due to an aggressive whine in 3rd and 6th. The one they put in is notchy, rough and just not a pleasure to work and still locks out at high rpm.

Now the Camaro, the difference is night and day with everything, just the feel of the car seems like quality is to a higher standard. The tremec manual trans is like butter and seamlessly goes through the gears and no lock out! The handling of the 1LE is in a whole different world compared to the mustang. I can throw this thing around like its on rails. The only slightly negative thing which isn't a big deal, is that the LS3 feels like a slightly lazier motor to the coyote. Other than that I am so pleased with my purchase!

You're not the first person I've seen complain about the MT-82 trans, but every Ford my family has ever owned had a crappy transmission. My dads explorer has probably had 4 trans rebuilds since he bought it lol

I think the "lazy" stigma is overblown though. The only real difference I experienced between the 5.0 and LS3 when I test drove both is the coyote revs higher. They both pull very hard to red line, and the LS3 is very happy to rev if you want to. I imagine the 5.0 isn't as good at being "lazy" when you want to be like you can be in the LS3. The LS3 has loads of torque all over the powerband, it's nice for me to go up grandfather mountain in 6th gear going 70 and never have to worry about down shifting. Just give it a little more gas and the small block just turns loud grunts into torque.

Congrats and to the forum. Your 1LE will wake up a little more when it gets some miles on it. Down the line a couple of small mods can help also. I added Bo White TB and a CAI Inc. intake, and my car became even more responsive.

congrats. 1le is one hell of a car.

I agree 100% about the ls3 feeling lazy compared to the coyote.

I would suggest its the throttle lag your feeling programmed into the Drive by wires potentiometer when it comes to being LAZY.... The deal is it would be worse with a automatic thanks to things like AFM that can cause a lag also. If you will compare the size and weight of the 5.0 to the 6.2 you will notice the 5.0 is considerably larger and heavier due to its overhead cams which while nice for revving high to make power miss out on torque also though some. Many tune away throttle lag eventually with mods or get a throttle controller. The 6.2 is a cheaper and easier power plant to build for power than its competitors and had to be matched with a so-so cam shaft unlike the Dodges or others and came with the LAG for safety and to limit the ability to harm the fuel mileage as it is a 6.2 not 5.0 in displacement thus requiring more gas for larger cylinder but also managing the mileage.... and with the EPA geeks pressing hard we have to deal with their aftermath..... Congratualations, you will be thankful down the road when the giant rubber band on the front controlling the engine does not snap or require replacing for a arm or a leg, and if your not familiar with building a ls3 well with CAI, headers, and a good cam you can be in the 480+ rwhp range with a good tune should you ever go that path. I netted 491 / 448 torque with a good cam , CAI, and headers on my last engine.
