I have a 2SS 1LE on order (supposed to be here next week) and have been following this thread. The info below is from the 2019 Camaro Track Preparation Manual. Since the manual specifically mentions Valvoline SynPower, why not use it instead of the Mobil 1? I was going to go to NAPA and get the deal they have now on the Valvoline. Curious as to why spend the extra dollars if the Valvoline is approved.
"Engine Oil (0W-40 or 5W-40 that meets the dexos2 specification. If this oil is not available, you can use Valvoline® SynPower MST 5W-40 or Mobil 1® 15-W-50 engine oil)" |

I don't think you understand how oil works. The MST will not provide better protecting on any startups as the mobil covers a wider range. Also, read some tests on the MST on Bitog. It's not well liked and didn't hold up well. There are better oils that don't have the BS dexos label if you think MST is decent for the car.

Note the car's manual recomments 3 oil grades as authorized for track use: 0w40, 5w40 and 15w50! The last one for track use only and the only oil approved for zl1 1le track use. Please note the 15w cold start up rating here and ponder it for a while. As far as pro analysis of Valvoline MST...a few have been published here by members after several track days and received top quality results. Personally i dont care if MST were to be "not well liked" by some Bitog blog users named "tomato", or "molycool"...etc. Dexos2 is not a "BS label". It is what maintains our car's warranty including unrestricted track duty. That's a BIG DEAL to anyone that tracks their cars. Moreover, the purpose of GM's Dexos standard is no different than licensing standards by other OEM like Porsche, BMW, Ferrari, Mercedes, etc. Cheers! So you just spent ~$45k on a sports car, get the best oil + filter, which is M1 0w40 ESP and WIX XP. There are plenty of reasons M1 ESP is superior, if you don't want to learn all about oil just trust the LT1 engineers and use it. |

Yup! People bitch about the cost of the most important thing you can do for your car (oil changes) yet spend hundreds and even thousands on silly cosmetic items just to look good.

And I wasn't bitching about price. If it's GM approved, I wanted to know why not to use the Valvoline. Of course I get no help from you or DaveC113.

It's not a super-simple question to answer, I can say it's low SAPS but then I have to explain that, etc... If you're really interested check out Bob is the oil guy forum, here and vette forums about the M1 ESP oil and why it's different/better. Or, if you don't want to learn and simply take someone else's advice, I'd recommend taking GM's advice and ignore everyone else, and run the M1 0w40 ESP. |

But seriously: no GM documentation (nor trusty GM engineers) specifically recommend Mobil 1 ANYWHERE. Not in the Camaro manual and not in the Corvette manual. All that is required is that oil meets Dexos2 GM standard and be of an appropriate grade. And btw Valvoline MST does meet Dexos2 now. We are all free to use whatever we deem best, based on whatever criteria we choose to apply. Personally, i go by what official documentation lists as approved, as i am damn sure GM engineers had direct input to all the specs there. Therefore, if they thought it wasnt necessary to specifically list Mobil 1 as a preferred oil, we have other choices - as listed - being equally good. But, that's my logic for my car. And anyone should be free to use their own logic for their own car. Cheers! |
