Probably is, but from perspective of litigation, they are probably making ALOT more money than they are losing through law suites.

After reading this thread I called OnStar myself to verify the dealer never activated it prior to picking it up and thankfully they didn't because I wasn't going to activate OnStar myself. Let us know how it turns out.

Just spoke with OnStar at 1.888.466.7827 . They advised that even though I did not continue with the services after the 30 day free trial expired, that vehicle operation data was still being collected. This was obviously being provided to third parties, like insurance companies. I requested that they cease providing that information immediately, and was told that they will cease doing that, effective today. The person I spoke to did not have English as their first language and the connection was not all that good, so it was not clear to me if they will stop collecting the data, or just stop providing it to others. I suspect the latter. Will be checking again when my insurance policy is up for next renewal.

Thanks to ZPirate, ctrlz, and everybody else for their comments, information, and suggestions.

Good luck to us all !

Great to hear that you got the issue resolved. This was a lesson to all of us.

And thanks to GearheadSS for his information about how OnStar is activated and the ability to opt in or out of providing the information to your insurance carrier.

Do you have to call or could you opt out using the car's onstar connection?

Don't know. Didn't try using the car's OnStar connection. I'm guessing that would work too

I have the State Farm Drive Safe program on three of my vehicles. I get a decent discount on those vehicles. They collect a decent amount of data and I get a google map of the exact route taken and precise location of any events. This new app uses your phone and just a BT tag (does not connect to vehicle). My Accord, Camry and Ranger aren't overly sporty. I also appreciate having the detailed trip reports for my 16 yr old daughter driving my Accord.

I declined adding this to the Camaro. I will call On Star to remove reporting to third parties. I do plan on keeping On Star for convenience.

My 30 days runs out the end of this month. I'll see if I get Onstar over the air notices in the car.

I just called. I never activated anything, however, the lady said my vehicle has "Connected Access" until 2028. That means the car will interface with the My Chevy App, and transmit Vehicle Diagnostics, which is where the CarFax emails I get are generated from.

Once my son (electrical engineer) looks at the link showing On-Star removal and gives it the thumbs up, I'll ask him to yank that spyware out of the car. Then I'll turn my phone GPS off when I hoon, and I should have some privacy.

There is a Smart Driver option in the My Chevy app. I just opted out 5 min ago.

Creepy company, yikes.

I just called them and asked for them to completely disconnected everything. The customer service rep had to transfer me to technical service to process a "Decline in Service". When I was connected to that department, I asked for that and to remove reporting to third parties.

They said they would completely deactivate the hardware in the vehicle while placed on a 3 to 4 minute hold - a few minutes later they said my account was closed and hardware was deactivated.

I asked what information was sent to a 3rd party, they said mileage and "diagnostic data" (which, I did request - and the entire reason I activated on the account in the first place).

They stated the data was shared with State Farm for "discounts."

They couldn't tell me what specific data was shared, and when I asked for them to provide me a record of me consenting to data being shared, they provided me yet another telephone number to call. I haven't done that yet.

So, TL;DR They were transparent with specifically providing data to STATE FARM. I'm not sure how transparent or informed the rep was regarding what data was shared. Despite sounding foreign, they seemed to take my inquiry rather seriously.

I also looked into opting out of LexisNexis but their web app requires input of a Social Security # - which is even creepier.

MANY MANY THANKS to the OP for sharing this info.
