This company specializes in this. I would look over your sales documents for any references to purchasing a "connected" vehicle.

Ford buyers can "opt-in" at time of purchase:

For GM, it apparently does work through OnStar.

Agreed 100%. Sounds like class action lawsuit material to me…

I just contacted GM about this issue. I was told if you never activated OnStar or if your OnStar subscription is no longer valid that GM doesn't collect the data. I'm not sure I believe what I was told. I never activated my OnStar when I purchased the car. I didn't want it or need it.

When the dealership activates your Onstar, there is an option to accept or decline sending data to your insurance company for "insurance discounts". I select deny for everyone unless they tell me they want it.

I'm wondering if your dealer actually told you this or not and if they didn't, I wonder if they just hit accept on your behalf.

I wonder if the dealership activated it anyway though. GM penalizes dealers if the customer doesn't activate their onstar.

That's got to be what happened to IndyPaceCar.

This! I picked my car up at the beginning of Covid lockdown, so, dealer just threw keys at me from a distance, and said "good luck!". I had to activate everything, and yes, I opted out of sharing for potential insurance discounts for On Star. 2 1/2 years, never had an issue with insurance, actually mine was lowered for 2022! Certainly not due to how I drive my Camaro.... LOL!!!

They did not. I just confirmed with OnStar that my service was never activated. I remember now that my salesperson gave me the information to activate it if I wanted to, but I had a 5 hour drive home and didn't have a lot of time at the dealership. I even did my own phone pairing when I got home.

It is nice to know that you can decline to have your information provided to your insurance company if you activate Onstar though. I'm assuming you can opt out later too if you want to.

I don't remember if they told me that or not. It was the end of the day, I was very tired and had a cold, and just wanted to collect the car and get home. Careless on my part

That's good. That's how it should be. I see a lot of people that were never even given the option and the dealer just activated it.

I suggest calling OnStar and opting out of the reporting to your insurance company. I don't see why that would be a problem.

My insurance company offered to lower my insurance a few years ago. All I had to do is plug in their key/chip into each of my cars. I said NO THANK YOU!! Thats really the only way I can see that they know about acceleration or hard braking. You would have to agree to them spying on you - otherwise thats a huge lawsuit waiting to happen!
