I must be lucky ,I use 8 quarts od Mobil 1 euro formula 0-40 with a Mobil 1 M1-113 filter and no ticking so far. I get the 5 quart jugs at Walmart for $28.95 .

Sounds like a type writer, especially when driving along a wall, like in a drive through. Drives me crazy, I'll have to try this.

I always let mine drain for 20 min with the filter off on the lift ,fill it with 8 quarts and check it after start up . It is always exactly at the full mark . don't understand how being exactly full would make it tick .Maybe it is an aftermarket cam thing .

The theory behind it is there is so much oil in the pan that the crank paddles the oil just enough to airate the oil and the air accumulates in the lifters and makes them tick. I figured since I was changing oil anyway I figured it was a free try lol. I prefilled the filter as always and put 7 quarts in the pan( a little over 1/2 quart low) and have been running it like that for 5000 miles. The lifter hasn't made a peep since. Is there something to it? Yes. Is the theory true? Not sure but it sounds reasonable.
Hope this helps others as it has seemed to help me.

Is there a windage tray for the stock oil pan that would prevent the aeration? Air in the oil affects more than lifters...it's not good for bearings, journals and pistons either.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but wouldn't taking oil away to reduce lifter noise cause other issues? I thought the LS3 oil delivery system calls for 8 quarts for optimum performance at high rpm so it stays lubricated and helps keep the engine cool (to some degree) all throughout the rpm range, would taking away 1/2 to 1 quart hinder that some?

Mainly the oil capacity is for the longer durations between oil changes. Today's synthetics and the amounts today's engines hold is why they can go over 10k miles between changes. High rpm oiling not so much.
It would startle you to know how much oil the crate engine class races run in their stuff lol
