Eaton Tru-Trac Differential

I had a stock differential and installed some 3.91 GM performance gears. Long story short I broke a tooth on the ring and pinion and had some really loud noise when in 5th or 6th gear when I would barely apply the throttle. I took the car in and the mechanic that took it apart said nothing was salvageable except the carrier.

I bought a eaton tru-trac diff, new 3.91 gears, and all new bearings. Had the mechanic install and took it for a drive. It doesn't make the horrible sound it did in 5th and 6th gear however it is still very noisy when in 5th and 6th when you left off the gas and coast in gear. If I put it into neutral the sound goes away entirely. Would this still be a problem with the differential even though it doesn't make a sound when coasting in neutral? The sound is only there when in 5th or 6th when you let off the gas and start to decelerate. Could it be backlash related?

Do you have a 1 PC drive shaft? Maybe some kind of harmonics.

Normal for the Eaton... you’ll hear it more when you get on/off the gas. It’s not anywhere near as quiet as stock. Had to do with the helical gearing inside the unit.

I had mine installed by GPI and they warned me about the Eaton clanking more. I also have the Hendrix offset bushings and they magnify the sound even more...

Yup what Hammdo said, I went with Truetrac and 3.91's, LPW cover with solid bushings. Noisy as hell. Do you know what fluid they used? The shop I had mine installed at used synth but I've since moved to the recommended Lucas that just about everyone on here uses and it quieted down a little.

Lucas 85w140 dyno oil (not synthetic) is what I went with to quiet it down some (as I road race).
