Independence Day

I wanted to take a moment this morning before the American lager starts flowing and the fireworks go off to discuss freedom.

We are celebrating independence from tyranny. This is not something that happened through war, although we sing about the rockets' red glare every time we sing the Star Spangled Banner. It happened in Congress, where a group of free-thinking Americans represented the American people at great risk to their own lives.

Freedom is the ability to think and act with a diversity of expressions; to do what others would not; to challenge authority or to comply with what authority would have you do; to have a choice. In America, and now many other parts of the world, choice is freedom.

We choose our clothes, our meals, our jobs, and most importantly our government. It is because we choose the government that our government reflects our collective will. Sometimes, we find ourselves in conflict with the collective will, and for that we are free to protest and challenge the government. We do all of this with the weapon best suited to freedom, the freedom of expression, and today expression is the dominant purpose of social media. Without such freedom to assemble and express our thoughts, this community could never exist.

Now that that's off my chest, crack a cold one and celebrate with me. It's an honor to share my freedom with you.

Sounds like the founding fathers were quite liberal....

They were liberal relative to the reactionary monarchy of Britain, but they came from different backgrounds with different ideas, and they didn't agree with one another on most issues. Like modern America, they came together when it mattered, and today we celebrate that they came together to decide that freedom was better than oppression.
