Yeah, 3 of them... amazing. They "never knew of the hack" before unloading the stock... I call bullshit on that.

OK... these asshats will charge you, just like XM/Sirius, if you don't call and cancel after your one free year if you do sign up.

It was once a company I was actually proud to say I worked for, when Rogers was CEO... after he retired, it kind of all went down hill.

“We will not bill You until the free trial period has expired and provided that You have not yet cancelled your trial membership,” say the terms, dated Sept. 6. “In the event that You wish to continue Your membership beyond the trial period, do nothing and Your membership will automatically continue without interruption and We will begin billing You via the payment source You provided when you signed up for the free trial.”

I got screwed by Linn Energy as well. I will never buy that kind of investment again. It is a weird kind of stock where shareholders are responsible for debt write-offs as income for tax purposes.

On top of the taxable income due to the write-off, I had to pay another $400 for their CPA company to file the paperwork with the IRS.

They can't charge you for it... it's supposed to be free if you want to enroll, BTW.

It is providing free service for one year through TrustedID Premier -- whether or not you've been affected by the breach.

I would probably join Credit Karma for free and watch your credit reports there since they pull from Equifax and TransUnion.

Remember, you get a free annual credit report from all 3 credit bureaus... https://www.annualcreditreport.com/index.action
Credit freeze is an option for a lot of folks... The problem with Credit Karma, it's telling you what's already happened, It isn't preventing theft. This much is for certain, you don't want the same person guarding your credit that allowed it to be hacked.

I want a new SS# not linked to the old one but with the same credit score. And Equifax has to pay all the costs.

Nice that you added that... but the Experian link they posted is a dead link.

This works if someone wants to us it...

Credit reporting industry gets hacked, puts millions of people at risk, makes a service available to protect individual credit, charges a fee for the individual to protect their credit from the industry that just put them at risk.

This isn't the first hack... it won't be the last. Do you remember Target's in 2013 (40M cards... and I was one of those)? Heartland's in 2009 (160M cards)? TJX in 2006 (96M cards)? Home Depot in 2014 (56M cards)? That's just a few of them over a few years that we know of.

You can thank Congress and your State Representatives for letting them charge you those fees... they approved them.

The cost of freezing and unlocking is minor to all the time I spent fixing, closing, opening, updating, calling, waiting on hold for the Target hack.

Guess where I don't shop anymore?

One big difference. Target isn't the credit reporting industry, neither are any of the other companies you listed.

The credit reporting industry shouldn't be allowed to charge us to protect our credit rating when it is the credit reporting industry that put us at risk.

Blame YOUR congress... did you even read my whole post, or just glean over it? The card info from the stores is the same info from the CB's... information is information. Geez. The difference, you still go back and give them your money after they screwed you and gave away your info. The CB's are regulated, and you have very little recourse w/ them.

This isn't the first one they have had either... you think Experian, or TU haven't had one before?

As much as I hate class action lawsuits I hope the one against Equifax puts those idiots out of business... which will also serve the purpose of sending a huge message to Experion and TransUnion.

Maybe now they will take the responsibility of having accurate information and keeping it safe seriously. But I doubt it.

I did read your entire post. I guess I wasn't clear in mine. For clarification. I can't opt out of being in the CR system. I'm there, you're there, everybody is there. I can opt out of using a specific company card for credit.

You can opt out of the credit reporting system... never apply for credit, pay cash for everything. You'll be a "ghost".
