If Howard was tuning it, you should discuss it with him. He would know.

My local shop uses Howard to remote tune, so I'm not in direct contact with him. I'm just curious what everyone else has done and their experiences/ consequences from turning it up.

My LS3 was happy at 15psi. BUT, I'm at mile high altitude, E85 and run turbos. I can get away with a few more pounds of boost compared to sea level supercharged guys. I like to run max-power rich versus max-power lean. My thought was to have that extra cooling in the cylinders at the small expense of a few horsepower. Ran that way for years until upping to an LSX so I could really throw the boost in.

Makes sense. Well I would talk to your shop. Make sure you have the fueling for it for one.

Here's what Howard told me when I asked a similar question. Of course im paraphrasing the conversation. I asked if it could be turned up more if I added a boost controller. In a nutshell he told me no. At 9psi I won't have to worry about the motor. He said if I wanted to turn it up to 12 or 15 that would be fine for a little while but it won't hold it forever. He said he would turn it up and make over 1000....... once or twice.

I think Trashbasket has the best advice. If the cost of a shortblock or longblock doesn't Phase you then go for it.

My engine builder said my LS3 with LS9 gaskets should be good to 20# and my latest tuner says it's getting greedy with the timing is what causes heads to lift. I do run E85. I've been running at 15# for a while and the only time I had a problem was when the wastegate lost the boost reference, i.e. nothing was controlling the boost so who knows how high it went. My tuner runs a Silverado with an SBE 5.3 at over 20# 800hp.

May I ask what WOT timing you are running.... Just curious if I'm missing something... I lifted several heads and blew out Cometic head gaskets, with LS3 heads as well as LSA heads with ARP studs... 16-22 lbs depending on the set up.... and never more than 12° BTDC @ WOT. C-16 fuel.



AllPro 6 bolt heads (LSW 12-4) and ringed copper gaskets allowed as much as 35 lbs with no issues on my last set up....


I realize everyone (tuners ) has their own experiences....

16° with E85. Not sure what gaskets the tuner runs on the 5.3. It's SBE with aftermarket heads. His truck is race only and he already has a motor to go in it if it blows so he can afford to run 20+. I'm also not running the Texas Mile, which I'm sure is less stress.

I'm at about 16lbs on the SBE. Granted, my car is strictly a street car, and only occasionally sees the full 16lbs. Car is full-time E85, fueling is way rich at WOT, plus I use 100% methanol as an extra safety. To date, my only casualty has been the stock clutch, which just recently started slipping under power. Oh, and I'm sitting at 80K+ miles, 68K of which have been under boost, minimum of 9lbs.

Let me simplify this for you.

It is not the parts, it is a battle between Octane and cylinder pressure.

Detonation is what destroys engines.

We have made over 800 RWHP on Stock long blocks with either race gas or E-85 and they live a very long happy life.

Pump gas Octane is your limiter on what you can and can not do, It's not the parts.
