Humming before start up
Hello everybody it's good to be back I just picked up my brand new 2018 1 l e 1ss Camaro on Friday and I did notice this morning when I went out to start up the car that before I open the door or shall I say the minute I open the door a humming noise came from the back of the car sounded weird . I'm thinking normal operation because I'm not used to the car but I want to know if anybody else has heard any strange noises like this thank you in advance

It may be the low pressure fuel pump getting the system primed anticipating the car will be started.

Its just the fuel pump priming... happens every time you open the drivers door

Most likely it’s the fuel pump.

If the noise stops after a few seconds, then (as others have said) it's the low pressure fuel pump priming.
For some reason it's louder in the SS than in the LT or any other car I have or had before.

Same thing, mine sounds like a small electric motor, for about 1 second when the door is first opened.

Well I'll be...
Always wondered what that noise was. I kept thinking it was the power seat moving....but then my 1SS doesn't have seat memory. |

I have had about 18 cars so far and have never heard this noise before-why the Camaro? Is it related to direct injection?

I would say yes. Plus that is also why these cars crank for a few seconds when cold as the mechanical high pressure fuel pump (cam driven and located at the back of the motor under the intake manifold) has to step up the pressure supplied by the fuel tank pump (400 psi - I think) to 2100-2200 psi. All this pressure is needed by those direct injectors so they can do their thing.

The car knows you are coming and primes the pump for your comfort and convenience to serve you better.
