Filthy gas?
I have been using pretty much the same gas for months now. Phillips 91 octane. no e85. My tailpipes have stayed pretty clean, albeit a little residue. but last 2 tanks, I have had to clean the soot off my pipes after each fill. Why has it changed?

Companies might be switching to winter blends, or your car might be running richer for other reasons, like dirty air filter, plugs, other routine maintenance items.

Condensation plus exhaust gas = dirty exhaust tips. More noticeable in the fall/winter because the exhaust gas vapors will condense quicker

Condensation? maybe. but had several dry days after last fill up. Winter blend gas? I have heard of that, but not sure what it is!
Only got 10k on this engine. and newish (5 month old K&N CAI) filter. |

You will notice in the winter that your MPGs will get worse, denser air + winter gas (they put additives so moisture doesn't freeze), and it does cause the car to run a little richer. Your sensors will make adjustments, but you will most likely just need to wipe down the exhaust tips more as you clean.

You should with your engine especially get a catch can and I would direct you to elite engineering. My exhaust tips always get soot from excess fuel and I even have deceleration popping which is unburnt gas in the exhaust catching fire in small explosions when the fuel cut off kicks in it causes the popping and can be tuned mostly out if one desires....But its the sound of music to my ears and is especially prevalent on downshifting and engine braking to help slow to a stop. Switching to winter or summer blends can have a change in the amount of carbon build up also.
You may also occasionally notice water coming from the exhaust which is normal condensation often called; " the coke bottle effect" as they tend to sweat from the temperature difference condensing moisture in the atmosphere on the opposite side of the cold side. Water then gets blown out of the exhaust and can leave tracks of soot being cleaned out..... Humidity does matter....

Thanks, guys! good to know.. So I guess I can't avoid it and will keep using the same gas. Those stock cans are gone in the Spring anyway!
