Advice on selling an engine

So I have a friend that has a large boat to sell. Boat itself has hull problems that will require extensive work. But the inboard motor is like new with less than 25 hours since rebuild. It is a 351 Windsor that was completely rebuilt in '98. Runs perfectly. That engine is most likely worth upwards of $3-7 grand. But the boat is driving down the price of the entire thing.
Would it be better to pay someone to divorce them and sell separately, or take the hit on the price for keeping them married to the rotting hull?
Anyone know of a good Ford forum to maybe post same question?

thanks!

I can't see where a 10 year old build 351 Windsor would be worth $3-7K, when you can get a New Crate motor for less.

I wouldn't pull it. Cause people that want the motor will want to hear it run. And you'll pay a fortune to have the motor pulled.

I'd get it running tip top and put the whole thing on Craigslist for about 3 grand. Keep dropping the price until it sells. Some DIYer will low ball it and do the work themselves.

That's a marine engine and is most likely a reverse rotation engine and will not work in an automobile.

Absolutely agree, try to set lower price until you get a deal.

10 year old? Try 19. He said rebuilt in 98. That isnt worth more than $500 to $900 tops.

If it was a Hemi or something like that it would be a different story.

Boats with twin engines usually have them turning in opposite directions so the torque reactions of the engines cancel each other out. If this boat was a single engine it most likely has standard rotation.

My thoughts exactly. Especially on a 20 year old rebuild. Rebuilding marine engines is very different in the parts needed. That would throw a flag up to me unless I could talk to the person that did it.

Volvo Penta was pretty good about running reverse rotation. Prop may be a good sign. Or just crank it and see which way it turns. Original alternator fan is another sign.
