I have State Farm. I have two vehicles that I pay much lower rates because I drive them less that 5,000 miles a year. I used to have to fill out a form with my odometer totals annually….
Haven’t had to do that for a couple years…
Now I know why.

I don't see Smart Driver in my app. Mine's a 2016. Does it only show up for certain years?

It shows up if you have an active Onstar Account. The option was visible for me until my factory 5yr Onstar sub expired earlier this year, and then the option went away along with all the other "remote" and diagnostic features.

Thanks,

Maybe somebody who belongs to Corvette forums should let them know about this also.

Our Camaro club would go to Watkins Glen on opening weekend to run the track. We are were always bummed when we had to go out behind the Corvettes. Pace car always had to slow down and wait on the doddering ole fools!

I agree with arpad-m, thanks for your service. And don't take ZED SLED or my comments personal. Both of us were, I think, referring to the stigma many Corvette owners have. And I'm a former Corvette owner and a Corvette Forum member, although not very active. So I'm familiar with how many Corvette owners are perceived by non Corvette owners.

...to your insurance company that will then apply surcharges to your premium based on the data sent? Because that's what a poster specifically complained about.

Also, the phone can be left behind when going for a drive or turned off (without intrusive electrical modifications), unlike OnStar.

Now am I happy that my phone does this? Absolutely not, but it's a bit apples and oranges in this context.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

But that is probably what ON-Star uses to justify surreptitiously collecting data on your personal driving history without your knowledge, and selling it to someone else for profit. Privacy is something we are all entitled to but it is slipping away more and more, (often by volunteering or even paying to lose it). If you don't care about it, then you're their huckleberry.

The car used to be a good way to get away from it all, whatever the reason. It's your business, not anyone else's. But the technology just can't leave you alone, there's no money in it for them.

Cause when you sign on the dotted line it says it in the contract, they can share information with 3rd parties. most contracts you sign these days include it.

Ok to be clear GM is not selling YOUR data. They might be selling a collective of data, e.g. pickup truck drivers do x,y or z. They are not selling data for John Doe unless John Doe agreed to it. Now we can look at how easy it is to get you to agree, but unless you do GM is not ratting you out.

When I worked there and wanted to access the data it was VERY clear if I got any data, it would be about a car but I COULD NOT see customer data or location.

That being said, your data is hugely valuable. It’s why Google is worth so much for a free product. Same for FB and, yes, as pointed out your phone. And Ultifi will allow GM to be more like Tesla and not only collect but send data.

So be very careful what you overtly or inadvertently agree to. I have had many letters from State Farm “want a lower rate?” Just give us access to your OnStar. Nope!
