Just took a rock through the windshield

i just took a rock through the windshield of my 2012 2LT RS 45th

I'm wondering if there is anything that I should know...before I take it in to get changed?

I have the HUD and the mirror with the back-up camera built in...

Looks like it will be more of a pain in the ass..than the typical windshield replacement.

I would love some feedback from those of you who have been through this...

Welcome to the club...lol...I had mine done at the dealer...they use the vin number to get you the correct windshield...might have to wait a few weeks depending on availability..I would insist on an oem part...independent guys might try and put in any ole replacement that "fits" your regular insurance deductible will probably apply, unless you have "glass insurance"...good luck

Just had mine replaced by the dealer, no issues are all, other then you'll probably have to wait a couple of weeks for the OEM glass. Make sure you get OEM and make sure they 1- Match the VIN so you get the HUD glass and 2- They look are the direction of your remote start, it can be vertical or horizontal, allthough I believe from 2011 forward are all horizontal.

Through the windshield?!?!?! Or did it just hit the windshield?!

Lol, if it was through the windshield, that's scary sh*t!!!

Dealer should fix you up no problem, with insurance of course.

Yea, but what's you’re deductable as they'll cover after that.

In some states like mine (FL) there is a law that broken windshields are replaced free of change up to 2x a year. What State are you in?

Here is a link for St by St windshield laws:

I had something similar happen to mine. Rock hit it and put multiple cracks across the window to the edges. Called my Chevy dealer and they said it could be 2-4 weeks to order the oem glass and my insurance would cover it. I could not wait as my glass was in poor shape so my dealer recommended I get ole replacement. I told them I had the HUD and the black box next to the rear view mirror which they need to know because there is a bracket it sits on. The ole glass looks identical to the oem I cannot tell the difference except for the little gm sticker that was in the corner.

make sure you let them know you have the HUD. I had to replace the windshield in my Grand Prix twice because the first one the HUD was all blurry.
Also if you have comprehensive insurance, that will cover your windshield.

Most dealers rely on 3rd parties to do windshields. I took mine to JN Phillips (I think they're pretty much nation wide) and they were very good about coordinating with my insurance company (in MA it's no-deductible) and getting the OEM glass based on my VIN. HUD and everything work fine.

Some companies offer to come to your house or work to do the replacement, but I understand it's better to take it to the shop, where they can manage the environment for curing the seal better.

I don't beleive HUD uses special glass, the image is reflected on your windshield , as it would on any windshield.

That's not true. The HUD glass is different. I will work with a regular windshield but the HUD windshield has a special film to help clear the image. Its also more expensive

Had to replace our windshield 6 months after we got our car. It took a month for it to come in because it was such a new car. That was the only complaint I had was the waiting for it to come in. The HUD reflects fine and we even got our inspection sticker put back on... Good Luck!
