I made the exact same switch - 1998 Z28 to 2011 SS. The main thing I'd suggest is to at least get a 2011 which has the HUD standard. Switching from the Z28 to the SS, the main thing I hated were the crappy gauges in the 5th gen. My cousin has a 2010 and he was adamant about making sure I got a year with HUD.

If you decide to do the cheap upgrade to the 1LE suspension parts, supposedly it's easier with a 2012 model. I'm planning on doing the upgrade and apparently there's a few differences in the the 2011 and 2012.

The rear lower control arms have the mounting points for the outboard sway bar on 2012+.

I will miss the gauges in my fourth gen. I really like them. With the fifth gen Chevrolet wanted to tie back into the 67-68 style gauges. They look ok, but nothing compares with the original. Is the 2011 more comfortable than the 1999? It seems like it would be and would ride better with IRS vs a solid axle. The seats also look to be much improved. I assume the visability isn't as good as it was in the fourth gen?

It’s a different type of ride, not necessarily better or worse. I had Bilsteins on my 99 and you probably know it makes a huge diff over the stock shocks. My 2011 is kinda more bouncy than I thought it would be so I’m going to upgrade to 1LE parts as soon as I get some extra money. The seats are more comfortable but mine are showing signs of wear at less than 60k miles while the 4th gen seats were in great shape at 108k. Regarding the visibility - definitely not as good but not as bad as people make it out to be. I also have a sunroof so it also makes it less claustrophobic but again, nothing beats a T roof (other than a convertible).

Considering Purchasing 5th Gen Camaro SS

The 13+ has better synchros in the six speed. 10-12 has second gear grinding issues.

If you don’t mind the dated styling, cheesy mail slot on the front bumper, and the goofy looking 80’s corvette rip off tail lights, stick with the 10-13.

If you’re like many, who opted for a more modern refresh while retaining key retro elements from the ‘69 camaro (i.e. tail lights), best to stick with a 14/15. The 14/15’s had some of the strongest sales numbers, despite what the 10-13 purists on here would have you believe.

my 12 got the fe4 suspension...check the codes, many did.

As the guy above mentioned, the biggest issue with the 10-12 cars are the non carbon fiber synchros. Every one of them will grind, now or soon. my 12 was grinding second when I got it at 43k. Upgraded the clutch master, stainless clutch line, remote reservoir and still grinds. Now at 61k second is getting hard to shift and popping out. At least I can rebuild my own trannies, but that doesn't mean I want too. Not very happy about this

I had a M6 in a 2011 SS and 2015 SS...I preferred the 2015 over the 2011. In the '15 the shifts were much better and as others have said, the issue with 2nd gear grinding was not present. and the '14/15 is better looking, imho. Wish I never traded it.

With the cars you’ve had in the past how the hell did you end up in a Camry?

I had a 1995 Trans Am with bolt ons and canned tune that was very quick off the line but would get destroyed by my 2010 SS on the top end. That LT1 had nowhere near the power above 4k rpm that my SS does.

As for handling though, the TA felt like it was on rails compared to the SS. It felt more like a go-kart.

With the high performance list he had, maybe insurance was eating him alive if he got speeding tickets? That's the only path I would think of going from that lineup to a Camry.

There’s so much bashing going on in this thread for the 14/15, I’m just trying to stick up for the later fifth gens lol
