2022 vacation

Well 2020 and 2021 was a bummer for a lot of reasons, so my wife and I are going on a driving vacation this year. I have a 2019 2SS we want to take from central IL to California, roughly following route 66. Mainly visiting the highlights like museums, old gas stations, etc.

I have a friend in California I want to see and I would like to drive Mulholand dr. and coastal hyway. I want to see the big trees and cross the mountains into Colorado to visit my wifes brother and another old Navy friend.

So my question to the group is, has anyone done anything like this?

If you have any suggestions, I'm all ears.

Here is my illness.

I drove from Milwaukee to Washington DC in early October, which was about a ~12hr drive (13 with the time zone change). It was my first time visiting anywhere east of the Midwest, so it was a pretty fun experience for me, and the looks I got were nice too haha. I’m driving to the Great Smoky Mountains this spring and hopefully out to Rocky Mountain National Park this fall.

The only problem I really had with the drive was sitting for hours on end, it made me pretty sore. I had to get up and move around every 3-4hrs, but if you’re planning to stop relatively often, you shouldn’t have any problem.

Also reaching up out of the window at toll booths was a pain.

Thumbs up

You would like to get a travel map of Ok. State it has a ton of places to see. Just off RT.40 around Elk city. N.M. has a drive alongside RT66 on Rt.40, Az. had a little but not a lot. Enjoy the trip I've done it about 7 times so far.

Wow, seven times!! We have several pieces of literature, guides, maps, etc.
Especially looking for advice once we get to CA. I think I'd like to avoid LA if possible.

My wife and I drove cross country from NY back in '85 or '86 in an '84 Camaro Z28 5 speed with t-tops. It was a blast. We both took 4 weeks off from work. We did this in September so kids would be back in school, roads not too crowded, and still warm out. We went out a northern route and came back a southern route. We saw a lot but there was a lot we also didn't see. We plan on doing it again when we retire in a few years so we will have more time. Hopefully we will do it in a 2SS if it ever gets built. Enjoy your trip.

I'm driving my ZL-1 to the San Diego area in April for a work meeting, and will be going to Orange County to catch up with a friend. My main criteria for accommodations is having a safe place to park my car at night. Thus, hotels with valet or at least a parking garage is a must. I'm not too keen on valet, but my car has valet mode, and I tip valets a lot to keep my car in the best space possible on the property.

Have a fun trip!

The only thing that worries me about driving cross country is knowing that some areas have garbage gas stations. I drove to Big Bend national park last spring and was getting low on gas. I had to fill up at a garbage gas station and my MPG dropped considerably. But, I tend to be a worry wart. Still had great fun there.

I see we have a similar illness. Love the chevelle. It’s a great color.

The 19SS is no slouch either. Enjoy the vacation.

When I take a trip in my Camaro, I just want to keep driving. Can't drive it enough. Have a blast on your trip.
