No worries. I prefer to have immediate access to my calcs on the laptop and phone rather than having to have internet access. Was just offering these guys an easy to use calc with ZL1 numbers already plugged in.

What if you went the other way and used the 3.23 gear that is in the automatics, and tried to rev out third gear?

as long as you are at the top of whatever gear at the finish line you are maximizing your rear gear ratio. however, you may not be maximizing your transmission ratios.....which means you aren't maximizing your horsepower potential.

Yeah I can see how that wouldn't be optimal in most situations. Could we tub the rear end so that we could fit bigger drag slicks back there instead of changing the gearing? How big do you guys think we could go?

I still don't get why nobody makes a gear set for this...?

The 1LE cars get 3.90's from the factory....that should be close enough to 4.10's for those who want them.

A change is not really necessary when you can already pull 1.4X short times. First gear is very short and shifts in the mid 20 MPH area. The longer gear will then help up top. Last edited by KD Innovations; 09-24-2012 at 09:08 AM. |

That may be close enough, but to have to buy them from GM would be a stupid price no doubt...

Actually I see the gear set from the 1LE (22813040) is only 291.00 which ain't too bad. Only gives a 5 percent increase in ratio though. 4.30 would be better.

1le gears do not fit the zl1 carrier. The only way to alter final gear ratio at this point is changing rear tire diameter.

I see you are driving the manual. I have been told that the ring gear size is not the only difference in the ZL1 rears, the output shafts are different also or something like that. If you want the auto rearend ratios, you need the entire rearend from a auto car. I asked about swapping rear-end gears when I first bought the ZL1 and was told that was not the way to go. You can swap a complete manual rear for the auto rear or vice versa but those are the only choices unless you go with a complete rear axel downgrade to the 1LE rear. Right now my car is getting the manual transmission rebuilt an I'm getting different ratios and oversized gears for 5&6. 4th is fine at the dragstrip for me but I have more power. If you really want to change the ratios of 3 & 4 I'm pretty sure it is possible in the transmission and probably costs less than swapping the entire rearend. Do you have drag radials on the car now? If your goal is lower ratios and you don't have wheels yet, get an 18" wheel and run the Mickey Thompson ET Street radial in size 315/30/R18. Tire will be 3 inches shorter than stock and give you about 11% less distance per tire revolution which should make a big difference of about 10 mph less speed in gears 3 and 4. Note, if you use about the same size tire on the front, the car will be real low. Get a front tire that is within 1" in height and you shouldn't have any problems with traction computer. My road racing tires are 2" shorter than stock and work great. If you are running stock tires you may gain 10 mph in the trap speed with a drag designed tire on the car.
