Track Day, how to Prep the Z28

Hi,

I just bought my Z28 about two weeks ago and live in Monterey CA so Laguna Seca is the home track. I had a ZR1 before I owned this car and I have seen the sheet that Chevy includes with the car for suggest before and after track day use. I am familiar with bedding the rotors and burnishing pads.

However, do I really have to change differential fluid after every track day if that car already has 9500 miles on it and is still under factory warranty???

Seems a little excessive, since its just an HPDE.....Please post! My ZR1 seemed to need less work after a track day :( I dont want to tear up my car just want to have some fun.

That's definitely excessive. I wouldn't go that crazy about changing diff fluid. Depends on how much time you actually get on the track.

DOT4 Brake fluid, and clutch fluid are key as well.

Change it to a high quality synthetic so that it can better handle the heat. It's got a cooler, you don't need to swap it that often unless you're doing a more endurance oriented session.

use the GM fluid for our cars...Rear Differential Fluid 75W-90 LimitedSlip:
GM Part No. 88900401. Amazon has it for $21 a quart. Our cars take a little over 1 quart so buy 2.

After several track days, my car has less than 400 miles. I thought..really I need to change the rear axle fluid already ? . Glad I did ! at 350 miles and several track days the fluid was already discolored. I have not followed the break in period, I believe in drive it like you stole it philosophy. The rear axle fluid will be changed on regular intervals going forward.

You will run your Z/28 much harder, create much high loads, carry greater speeds into the corner, through mid corner and onto the exit. The Z/28 Torsen differential will put down power hard for you. Change the fluid ;-)

all good advice! will do! shouldn't be too difficult to DIY right? or will the computer have a field day with me if I change the fluid myself?

It is very easy to change the differential fluid. There are two plugs on the drivers side of the differential. Remove the lower plug with a 3/8" socket extension and drain the fluid. There is a fill plug above the drain plug. Use a small piece of rubber hose on the bottle nipple or transfer pump to get the new fluid in the differential. Approximately 1.2 quarts and fill until the fluid weeps out of the fill hole.
