Minimum Thread for Track day

Hello,

Newbie here so go easy on me.

So I took the plunge for the ZL1 and now I'm heading on my first track day this coming Saturday, I have ordered some new tyres, however they've been delayed for some reason and wont be here till next week.

I've just about hit the wear bars on my stock F1 rears.

Question is, is it safe/ok to run on the track with the tyres the way they are.

I've read some contradicting information, some say get them changed, some say tread doesn't matter and its all about the age of the tyre that affects grip, hoping some track gurus may chime in here.

Also on another note, how much tread am I liking to loose on a track day, I'll be taking it easyish since its my first time and I don't know the track yet. I don't want to rub them down to the wires and be driving on those for the next week.

Thanks in advanced!

A little hard to say.....

If it's your first track event and the tires are a little worn you should be ok. I would only drive 6/10ths or at max 7/10ths so you stay within control of the car. Your race lines and where and how you enter and exit the corners are more important than your speed at this point.

Just go out and have fun. Once you get to know the track you can push it a little just wait until the G2's warm up otherwise you will get snake bitten.

If it is dry outside without any water on the track then you should be fine. I've tracked on tires that didn't have much tread left and grip was fine, really the tread is there to direct water off of the tire. There's a reason why true race cars do not have tread.

With that being said though, inspect your tires to make sure they look safe. Since you're near the wear bars you've obviously driven on the tires a lot, you'll want to make sure all of the tires are free from defects, nails, etc.
