Well, he certainly was speeding. There's a straight before a 70 degree 25 mph turn where a stop sign was. He embedded the stop sign (a metal one) in the engine as he couldn't make the turn, and there are brake marks from the stop sign to across the street where the car ended up.
Reports are speed was involved. Knowing the layout, he was probably still doing 30-40 when he hit the stop sign, so he was likely speeding and didn't brake enough for the turn. No indication he was racing, however you never know...his teammates apparently saw the accident and drove over to where he was to see if he was ok.
