Actually 1le's don't have better tires for the drag strip. Street and road racing yes but mainly its the 3.91's that help them. I gained .2 on my et with the gears on my first try

His mods probably didn't do much of anything.

He needs some long tubes and a good tune.

An SS with long tubes and a good tune will beat a stock 1LE (drivers being equal).
Most SS's run at least mid 12s with long tubes and a tune if the driver knows how to drive. I believe 12.2 is the fastest (last I checked) with just intake, headers, and a tune (no other mod - stock wheels, stock tires, no weight removed, etc).

Long tubes and a tune make an SS a completely different car (if the tuner is good).

I'm no longer stock now. I have Stainless Power long tubes w/o cats, CAI intake, and I'm getting tuned this weekend.
