There were a total of 28 people injured, 14 were treated at the track and 14 were transported off property. 2 are in critical but stable condition, one of those is a minor.

My thoughts and prayers go out to those injured in today's accident.
It looks to me the tire and suspension parts that went into the stands all but went OVER the catch fence. If you watch the video, you can see part of the top of the fence is drooping after the car hits the fence. In this instance I don't think a double catch fence would have made a difference, a taller catch fence, YES! The catch fence did it's job, it kept the other tire, suspension parts, and the engine from going into the stands. But I agree, a double catch fence would not be a bad thing. |

Now they are saying 38 people were hurt and 1 is hospitalized and the 500 tomorrow will go on as scheduled. That was from MSNBC. |

I watched a video on ESPN, played and paused it a number of times, you are right, the tire went through the hole in the fence. With that being said, a double catch fence would have made a big difference!
Initially it looked like the tire may have been sling shotted over the fence when the car spun around, but obviously not. |

Seeing something like that would make you never want to come back to that track.
I thought I had seen a gate there before, those are always weaknesses in the fence, they need to get rid of them.

Here is a pic showing the tire and suspension in the air. A second catch fence 10 feet behind the first would have caught this tire.

Nice catch on the pic Angrybird 12, had the same discussion with a guy at work you and I had, but trying to explain the tire did not go over the fence, I will show him this pic!
