Is it widely agreed that the center speaker is a mistake and a hindrance to sound stage, spacing, and localization?

agree it pretty much sucks.....especially considering it is an "upgrade".
I am about to do my own upgrade....replace the factory amp and add a sub.

I have to agree with these folks.. It is a fine system... for your mother.. but it is such a let down when you think about the whole car. GM spent 4 years to get EVERYTHING right. and they blew it when it came to the stereo system. It lacks in clarity at mid to high volume and there is no real bass to speak of. And that MTX box/amp that they will sell you for $1.000 is a joke. yes it makes it thump a little but you can't polish a turd. My SS2 will be arriving the week of Christmas. about the only thing that will be left untouched (and i am talking about the sound system) it the head unit.. I have Everything ready to make the swap to make my SS sound better then my Work truck..

Read on if you want to know what I plan to do

It starts with ripping out the existing amp and speakers sound deadening the entire trunk.
SoundStream 5.11s in the door and dash W/ crossovers
SoundStream 4.0s (4 total) in the rear deck lid
SoundStream Exact 10 Sub in a 3 foot ported enclosure tuned to 29 htz
all be powered by a SoundStream Continuum Amp
With a Cap to keep the power steady.

This system ROCKED the hell out of my 89 RS let's see what it does in this one.

I'm no audiophile, but here's a rundown of my experience with GM upgraded sound systems. (keep in mind I also do not need or want a system with bass that shakes the mirrors off the car)

1985 Trans Am - four speaker base system - sounded fine - no crackle
1987 Trans Am GTA upgraded performance system - virtually no bass and shook and rattled.
1989 Formula -base system - sounded adequate
1990 Grand Am - base system - sounded absolutely incredible.
1993 Grand Am - base system - sounded okay
1996 Formula - Monsoon system - any bass input above the halfway point caused all sorts of distortion and crackling
2001 firehwak - Monsoon system - see above
2005 Tahoe - Bose system - 120K miles and it sounds incredible.
2006 Trailblazer SS - Bose system - no bass, speakers kept cracking and were replaced under warranty - they were cracking again when I traded it for the SS
2012 SS base system - so far so good, but I haven't really pushed the limits yet. As to all their 05 and newer cars I wish they'd get rid of the scrolling messages about song titles and radio stations, I find it distracting.

Probably due to cost considerations?

Also based on your screen name you may have a more critical ear or demand more from a system than most people.

Compared to what Boston acoustic can do it sucks...not loud, bass is inconsistent and speakers are kind of weak. But like I said that's comparing to Boston acoustic. For a stock system it's ok

i have the 45th anniversary and it has BA as a "premium sound" its honestly in my opinion shitty as hell but i have to deal with it i feel, hear no difference between 19 to 30 on the volume and it sounds distorted im waiting to change everything out once the money comes in lol but its decent for now i guess

My Toyota base model Tacoma work truck is louder, cleaner and has more low end than th B.A. in the Camaro.
