What is the Z28?

Ok- I'm way new to the Chevy Game, and I've read through a few threads, but I honestly don't know enough about the Camaro to even know what the Z28 is (plus I'm too excited to get my Camaro in the next month). I'm assuming it's a more powerful Camaro, but is there more to it than that?

We don't know.

Not "officially". We expect it'll be something along the lines of a Mustang GT500 competitor. Supercharged, stupid-high hp, altered appearance, and handling upgrades, etc.

Throughout the Camaro's history, the Z28 has been the most prevelant "top Dog" factory Camaro. This one should be the best, yet.

Well, if you are talking about the long anticipated 5th gen Z/28, only GM really knows what it is at this point. However. it is widely rumored that it will include a more powerful engine, upgraded suspension, badging, different body styling, etc. None of that has been confirmed or denied by GM though.

BTW, if you look at Wikipedia, it gives you some history of the Z/28 in each generation of Camaro. Here is the info for the 1st gen:

"The Z/28 option code was introduced in December 1966 for the 1967 model year. It was the brainchild of Vince Piggins, who conceived offering "virtually race-ready" Camaros for sale from any Chevrolet dealer.[1] This option package was not mentioned in any sales literature, so it was unknown to most buyers.[2] The Z/28 option required power front disc brakes and a Muncie 4-speed manual transmission. It featured a 302 cu in (4.9 L) small-block V-8 engine, 3" crankshaft with 4" bore, an aluminum intake manifold, and a 4-barrel vacuum secondary Holley carburetor of 780 cfm. The engine was designed specifically to race in the Trans Am series (which required engines smaller than 305 cu in (5 L) and public availability of the car. Advertised power of this engine was listed at 290 hp (216 kW). This is an under-rated figure.[2] Chevrolet wanted to keep the horsepower rating at less than 1hp per cubic inch, for various reasons (e.g. insurance and racing classes). The factory rating of 290 hp occurred at 5300 rpm, while actual peak for the high-revving 302 was closer to 360 hp (268 kW) (with the single four barrel carb) and 400 hp (298 kW) (with optional dual-four barrel carbs) at 6800-7000 rpm. The Z/28 also came with upgraded suspension, racing stripes on the hood and trunk lid, '302' front fender emblems on the early cars, and 'Z/28' emblems in late 68 & 69."

Years past and hopefully soon to be here, the Z28 was the top notch Camaro in HP and handling. It was one of the baddest cars in the 60's and 70's before emissions control killed the HP ratings and all but killed what a true Z28 was until now, I hope any way. Yes the price will be up there but if you want the BEST, you have to pay.

Mine will be cooler than any old stinkin' Z-28.

There is NO WAY I could have waited for 2 to 3 years after the 5th Gen came out. And that still continues for me. So then it would be waiting for the Z-28 and trade, or mod mine and keep it. NO WAY I can wait to mod this car up. When I'm done though, I should beat a stock Z-28 anyway.

The first generation Z28 was far and away the best ever. I think the fifth generation will be a much better car, the only thing it won't have is the originality of the first gen. You just can't touch an original.

"should" being the key word, right? hehehe

Yes. Well, at least there should if they don't want to disgrace the name.

Thanks for the info guys (and for being nice to the newby). This will be the first Chevy I own (I had a Pontiac Grand AM in College, but I don't think that counts). I honestly haven't been this excited about a car, plus I have never ordered a car before, so this whole experience has been pretty cool for me.
