I saw this not long ago, myself. It's boggling to me how they didn't assume Camaro owners (or ANYONE else) would want this. But, probably best to start with a smaller use-case than opening the flood gates to all of their vehicles.

Either way, I think it'd be a great system to implement and long overdue.

I don't think ability was ever a question or problem, building a system like this from scratch is an intern level 3-4 week project. Given an extra 2 weeks they could also implement production stats like breakdowns and pivots by any combination of RPO codes, paint colors, trims etc., so that, you know, you could finally find out how many cars were built in your paint color, combination of options and the like.

The real question is how come this has begun to gain traction only now, and why they are guinea pigging it with the C8, when they could easily sell 2-3x more of those than the plant can manufacture, even with absolute zero sales (or order tracking) support. Perhaps it's just that gm is far behind the times on this front, and the new order tracking system has been sitting in the pipeline for several years...

That's the most egregious part. Clearly people have been frothing over this kind of thing for YEARS - look at signatures dating back a decade, etc....how much would it really cost to implement, and in order to save salesmen time? Maybe they don't WANT to let customers check their status in order to poke and prod their salesmen more, but whatever. Maybe they want to force customers to contact the salesmen more on purpose.
