There's footage somewhere from a camera on the autobahn catching a drunk guy rolling his Mercedes convertible coupe with the roof DOWN and walking out of the wreckage. The rollbar popped up and all the airbags came out and kept him in the car and he walked out.

Modern car safety is really amazing. Don't let anyone tell you the old cars are safer because they were made out of good old fashioned steel.

Most cars built until the advent of computer designed crumple zones and air bags are at least somewhat death traps.

From what I heard he was driving a ford ranger and it looked like a ball after the crash however, I really never saw it.

They still won't listen.

"I'd rather be surrounded by all that metal!"

Uh-huh, and you'd be dead when all of the crash forces were transmitted directly to you instead of being absorbed.

It's really a convenient way for the terribly stupid to self-identify. I just assume they don't understand even the simplest of Scientific concepts and move along swiftly.

You dont need to be an enginneer to see old cars are death traps.

Just looking at the old solid steel steering column aligned straight to the drover's torso should scare the bejesus out of you.

And the fuel tank and cap exposed in the rear. Glad they don't make them that way anymore.

I feel like Engineers have developed well beyond the simplest of Scientific concepts; so yes I absolutely agree.

gweiser, how are you doing today? Given the severity of the crash, I would assume you are a bit banged up - hope you are doing OK.

Not trying to be that guy but I kinda doubt that the convertible top being up would have really helped much in that scenario.

I think this is it, although the roof was actually on in this footage. You can see the guy get out of the car after it came to a stop in the ditch:

Thumbs up This is why you don't buy a mustang!

So glad you are OK. Camaro and Mustang are two of the only sports cars ever crash tested (both NHTSA and IIHS). The Mustang fares worse in the Insurance Institute crash testing, especially passenger side impact.
Mustang small overlap test is "Acceptable", whereas Camaro is "good."

To be fair, Camaro has a "marginal" reading for roof crush strength, however in my opinion a rollover is much less likely than a side impact or front impact.

The video of the Mustang front small overlap crash test shows the passenger compartment buckling, and the Camaro's remaining intact. These are on the Insurance Institute website, and YouTube.

There is no data available for sports cars by Porsche, Ferrari, Maserati, Corvette, or even the Nissan Z, because of low production numbers and therefore being exempt. Some older cars by Aston Martin and Ferrari had exemptions to not require head air bags!

I would never drive a car anymore with the data available without a full complement of front, side, and head airbags.

That said, a Camaro is certainly not as safe as say, a Volvo SUV, but it is more than acceptable, and soooo much better than older cars.

The Impala video puts to rest any arguement about good old American Steel.
There is no substitute for engineering computing power and use of modern high strength materials in critical areas.

Again, I am grateful you are safe.
