2020 GT500 beats 2020 C8 Z51 at VIR 3.3mi.

I'm obviously not a Ford guy, but this is impressive, IMHO. Sure, the C8 is outgunned in the hp department, but on the other hand, it is much lighter. I wasn't able to find any lap times for the ZL1 1LE on the 3.3mi. circuit at VIR, but I would assume that the time is greater than the Shelby's.

Somebody needs to do a head-to-head ASAP.

IMO these types of head to head comparisons don't mean too much, especially when that close. Too many variables for such a long race. Human error can account for many things during such a long run. Heck, even in short straight runs, same guy, same car, times may vary greatly. To say that the Mustang is definitively faster than the C8 after this type of run is just naive.

Correct. The GT500 is not definitively faster. It beat the C8 Z51 around VIR by ~1 second. Even if they ran them 10 times and they tied 10 times, I simply find it to be quite impressive that a 2+2 (albeit the 760hp Shelby) equaled the C8's time.

Theoretically and historically, a 2+2 should not be able to hang with a 2-seater sports car on a road course (of similar performance proportions). Both GM and Ford have morphed their 2+2 cars into sports cars that can hang with track beasts costing 2-3 times as much. Last year, the ZL1 1LE was pitted against a 911 GT3 RS at VIR and beat it by 2 seconds.

These cars are no more just a straight line, one trick pony.

The track they ran the C8 and GT500 is a different version of VIR apparently. I guess MT used the VIR Full circuit and C&D uses a different one

I am a huge fan of the GT500 and would love to own one, but some perspective... the King of All Mustangs is beating the base Corvette. Once the Grand Sport and Z06 come out the GT500 will still be a super cool car but nobody will be testing it against those Corvettes because it would be pointless.

Nice to see the 5th gen 1LE is barely over the 3 minute mark itself!

You are correct; however, the GS and Z06 will undoubtedly cost more than the GT500. The C8 Z51 and the GT500 are nearly identical in price. Again, I simply find it to be quite impressive that these 2+2's have evolved into more than just 1/4 mile machines.

Per Motortrend's Testing (as optioned):
$88k-C8 Z51
$80k-Base GT500
$94k-Carbon Fiber Track Pack GT500

OK...so the GT500 with carbon fiber track package worth well over 90 grand beat the performance you can get from the new 65,000 Corvette (base plus Z51). Kudos to the GT500 and it's amazing performance, but we all know this test doesn't tell us much...other than it cost another 40 grand to get a Mustang that can beat a C8 Corvette on a race track.

The real test I want to see is the ZL1 1LE versus the GT500 CFTP. These two are direct competitors in my mind...the very top dog pony cars. I think the GT500 CFTP might have what it takes to beat the ZL1 1LE...maybe. But again...its what...20 grand more expensive?

It will be a real shame if we never get to see a proper test done between these two cars. I'll blame Ford if so. We never got to see a regular GT350 throw down with a SS 1LE, so I kind of feel like that might end up as the case here.

I agree in part. You can buy a 1LT w/ Z51 for ~$65k. A base GT500 is ~$70k (MT's test had it beat the Z51 by 1 second). 1 second is miniscule and could probably go either way. The GT500 CFTP beat the Z51 by 3 seconds and yes, the package costs an extra $20k. Yikes!

My intentions of this post were strictly to show that an American 2+2 can now hang with a world-class sports car. The ZL1 1LE has proven this over the past several years as well. As previously stated, GM and Ford have successfully mutated both of their pony cars into sports cars. I still remember back in '07 when Car & Driver put the GT500 against a C6 Z51 Vette on a track and the Vette wiped the floor with it. In a short amount of time, these 2+2's have come a long way.

Lastly, I can't wait to see a head to head between the ZL1 1LE and the GT500. If they use the CFTP car for the comparison, it should win; however, it costs $25-30k more than the 1LE.

Both the ZL1 1LE and the 2020 GT500 are formidable foes for almost any high priced track beast costing much, much more (Porsche, McLaren, etc.). Truly amazing.

You know, the more that I look at the Tahoe Z71, the more that I see it as a fairer successor of the K5 Blazer than New Blazer is for the S10 Blazer, at least in look and purpose
