Only a matter of time before California tries this...

The day we will have to literally fight battles on many fields just to retain our freedoms is coming. Much as it pains me to watch, Europe, where I'm from originally, seems to be on its way to becoming a cesspool, and we can only hope to learn the lesson before it's too late.
Yes, lowering the speed limit to 5 mph and banning human drivers will eliminate 99.999% of traffic fatalities. Similarly, allowing zero self-expression eliminates 99.999% of bullying. The goal looks rational, often even noble, but the means is downright sinister, and the end state (pun intended) is worse than the first.

Yeah, but i'm sure the government would do something brilliant, like ban non-autonomous cars or require older cars to be upfitted with automation.

Actually... California is doing the exact opposite: California seeks to remove speed limits entirely on sections of I-5 and CA-99 |

Lol, in what year are you living? Modern cars let you survive high speed crashes pretty good. Otherwise nearly every crash on the Autobahn would end in death.

Put the blame where it belongs, on the people. Lawmakers are given a shitty situation where people don't want to curtail the activities causing the problem, won't relinquish any of their "freedom" to drive without serious testing and recurrent testing, and what choice do you have besides to let people die, or use technology to fix the issue with self driving cars, automatic limits, etc.? As technology increases and gives people more power (cell phones), we find that people as a whole are unable to utilize that technology responsibly.
