Question New JBA Shorties better than before?

I'm in the market for headers and know about the pros and cons of LT's vs shorties so this thread is not necessarily intended to be a debate on the subject. Since I live in Socal and most of the cops here are jerks (hate to say it) I've been contemplating shorties; not to mention the SMOG benefits of shorties and the non-tuning requirement as I'd like to do some no-tune mods for the next year at least (just to make sure no warranty issues arise). I know ARH has a new shorty header that's 50 states legal and probably great quality but it's very expensive; in fact it's so expensive I'd probably just bite the bullet and pay for LT's before I spend that much on shorties

However, JBA seems to have upgraded their shorties recently as I see they received a CARB 50 state smog legal certification. They are touting 18+rwhp gains off a bone stock SS with just their shorty headers. Does this seem right? Did they redesign their headers over the last couple months and I missed the memo or are these the same headers now with a CARB sticker? I could've sworn I looked at these headers 3 months ago and they didn't have the "CAT4WARD ®" design in the description last time I checked. Any thoughts on if these are new and if the power gains are true? For $700 (including their catless midpipes) I could have potentially 40RWHP without tuning and a beastly sounding ZL1...

You'd need a tune for sure with cat less mid pipes

I'm not a ZL1 guy but did put a set of JBA shorties and their HF cats on my 1LE recently and they work great. For smog state folks it's an easy no brainer. The only thing really required that JBA doesn't include are the extensions for the O2 sensors. No tune required so long as it doesn't throw a CEL.

Oh and they do sound great with the NPP on my car

I stuck with the stock manifolds, and installed the Solo HF cats and it made a huge difference. I also have QTP cut outs, but don't use them on a daily basis.

The collector area is important for shorty headers to make any power over the stock manifold. Many times the tubes are flattened to fit into a short collector due to space constraints. Those JBAs look good in that area.

Did you do a before and after dyno with the JBA shorties and HF cats? I'm just wondering if the 18RWHP gain that JBA claims on their website is valid. The ARH shorties are twice as expensive as JBA's and they only claim a 10RWHP gain . The only reason I would go with the catless JBA midpipes vs. the HF midpipes on the ZL1 is I've heard from many reputable tuners (including TED @ JANNETTY RACING) that with these high HP supercharged engines the HF cats will not last long. But I'm really only shooting for around 600-650RWHP when it's all said and done so maybe the HF cats will last on my final setup . So far my only engine mod is the ROTOFAB and I definitely want more sound and power from this thing without tuning just yet.

I plan on running just these JBA shorties for a year and then doing a lower pulley, ported TB, injectors, and maybe a mild cam with a tune once the warranty is close to expiring.

Don't know that this works with CARB, but SLP has a package you can order through a dealership, have it installed there, and it not void your warranty. Shorty headers, "high flow" air filter, download tune.

Thing is, it's super expensive
