I just did this yesterday, I got approved from my credit union then went to the dealer and they gave me a much better rate!

When i was house shopping my poor credit got destroyed thanks to all these damn banks doing all these hard checks on my credit, wrecked it hard. Note to all those looking at foreclosures and having to get approved with the bank that owns the house 1st, it f's up your credit hard. Went from like a 780 something to a like 640 all just from credit checks.

When I went into the finance office, the finance manager knew he had to beat my 2.9 rate. He offered me 2.66, or something close, but after a lot of negoating and insisting C5 members were getting in high 1% range, I was able to get 1.89% over a month ago on 60 months. If you have a great credit score and know what the market will bear, you can do better than their first offer. It's how they make more money off you, or how you can beat a standard offer from a bank or CU. If the dealer doesn't finance your purchase, the finance manager doesn't make anything off your car, so they have an incentive to work with you. This is the other part I hate about buying cars. The only way to avoid it is to pay cash. You have to stand your ground.

Tell the dealer to try to beat it. I was so surprized that I got 1.99 pre approved at the credit union for 60 months and the dealer beat it from several banks.

Use the sure thing to see if you might get even better!

Good luck!

The rate I got through the dealer ,but they use capital 1 was 1.54% for 60 months. I was very excited for that rate. It was almost too good to be true . But that was the rate.
