Tire Comparison: PS4S, Cup2, SC3, SC3R, R888R

Pretty cool comparison I ran into on youtube. All tested on a SS1LE. Check it out!

Tires compared include:

Michelin Pilot Sport 4S UTQG 300 AA A
Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 180 AA A
Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3 220 AA A
Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R 100 AA A
Toyo R888R 100 AA A

Great Post. Having done a decent amount of driving on FOUR of these tires, I can attest to fact that on the track the 3R was the quickest of the group and the 4S was the slowest but not by much in terms of lap tines.

The SC3 was certainly quicker than the 4S in the DRY and of course slower than the SC3R. This tire is not bad in the wet although far less capable than the 4S. If you had never tried the 4S then I could see where this tire would be the best for dual purposes.

Now if you factor in the fact that you ALSO may use your car as a daily driver, you QUICKLY eliminate TWO of the tires. The 3R is absolutely DEADLY in the rain even when the slightest amount of road moisture is present such as DEW on the road in the early morning. I am quite frankly AMAZED that GM put these tires on a car WITHOUT some pretty strong disclaimers that the car is NOT roadworthy in the wet.

NOW I ORIGINALLY thought that the TOYO 888R tire would be BETTER than it is as far as handling because of its treadwear rating. The road noise he mentions in the video can NOT be overtstated. These tires are LOUDER than an ALL TERRAIN tire on an off road vehicle. 888R tires ARE good for roll racing if you are into that type of thing. This is the SECOND tire I would NOT put on a daily driver.

I have used the 4S in the rain road racing a couple of times and it is no doubt the quickest tire in these type of conditions.

In conclusion, I would use 4S for daily driving and for track purposes I would use Pirelli Road Racing slicks which are quicker than any of the tires mentioned.

I think you have to say 3R, AND, the SC3, both are deadly in rain/wet though the SC3 is fairly livable under 40mph. I haven't got 3R experience but the SC3 tried to kill me a few times on the highway until I could keep it around 40mph.

Being that I currently use tires for road and track, this just reinforces my appreciation for the SC3. It performs well on track, relatively inexpensive, can handle rain in a crunch… it’s currently the sweet spot for me.

If I bought a second set of track wheels/tires then I would probably go 20 oem with ps4s for street and 19 with SC3R or 18 with takeoff slicks.

To be fair, I did NOT have the SC3's for long. I bought a set for my ZL1 1LE AFTER I went thru TWO sets of 3R's in about 3000 miles in a short 3 months time.

About the time I decided the ZL1 1LE was not a viable daily driver, I bought the SC3's and those were what was on the car when I traded it back in. I did drive the car a couple of times in the wet with the SC3's and they were FAR more stable than the SC3R's for sure in those circumstances. I didnt go any faster than about 75MPH in the wet though.
