Let’s talk amps and subs
Hi all,
Looking for some advice on a few things. First to mention I have a 2012 convertible with the Boston acoustics radio. I swapped out the deck for a pac unit with kenwood dmx 7706. I also replaced the speakers - polk db6502 in the front and Kicker 47KSC3504 in the rear. I also picked up an alpine mrv-m500 mono block amp for a sub. So that leaves the need for a four channel amp for the speakers and a sub and enclosure. Amp needs to handle minimum 65 watts rms at 4 ohm, but the closer I get to 100 watts the better. Sub should be 10” and 2 ohm stable since that’s the sweet spot for the amp. I assume I need to go with the s u b t h u m p enclosure since that seems to be all there is for the convertible. I’d prefer to spend $150 on the sub and $150-$200 on the amp unless there’s a big reason to step up slightly. I listen to a lot of electronic dance stuff, and top 40 type music. All suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thank you very much for your time. Last edited by DMan918; 10-31-2020 at 09:05 AM. |

I didn’t go value, I went with the JL 4 channel amp which is worth every penny. I got my box for around $100 from Sub**th**p. He has many options that are custom for gen5 Camaros.

No doubt jl amps do a good job. Being that I don’t have anything too crazy for my speakers, I don’t think I can justify spending double for a jl amp. I’m not the car stereo junkie I used to be (though you should see my home theater, lol).

Well went ahead on an alpine r-w10d4. Should be awesome. Got an incredible price on it and didn’t pass it up.
Now for a four channel amp??? |

Enough said lol . Naw ones my brothers and the others mine the one without the writing . Was a demo model that my brother found for me . Sent it off to wade Stewart to be rebuilt and upgraded . Done with the new amp of today . They suck !! Lol
Had an alpine 1channel 1k wat can’t remember the model but that burnt out twice lol that mono amp was powers 2 jL w3 10 2ohm . Damn amps tire out to quick. Plus I like the fact I have an amp that can run my whole system and probably beat a lot of amps today . |

Interesting. Yeah in the past (like 20 years ago), amps never died on me. Really a shame if today’s amps have such qc issues. Thanks

All said, still considering some of these budget options. Even considered a sound ordinance which is highly recommended by crutchfield, or what seems to be highly reviewed Rockville. Not sure I’ll go this cheap but it’s a thought.

I run 2 catch cans...

Stay away from Sound Ordinance. I got one of their sub boxes free when I ordered my sub from Crutchfield, and the amount of work I needed to do to get it beefed up wasn't worth the hassle. For instance, they went cheap on the wood thickness, and wiring connections. It wouldn't surprise me if they took many shortcuts on their amps too.

I purchased a Zenclosure sub box. I got it pretty fast. Originally ordered from ST but after a while of waiting and getting some attitude, I cancelled my order. I have two 10" Kickers with a 600W kicker amp. Puts out more bass than I need.

The only enclosure option for a convertible I could find was the s u b t h u m p. Zen closure doesn’t do one. At any rate, I have it and will need to look at instal instructions since it sounded like I may need to remove the retractable screen and carpet behind it.
Only piece left for me now is a 4 channel amp. |
