At Camaro Fest, Al basically said there wouldn't be an electric Camaro as long as he was there. Good.

What Al wants and what GM orders him to build are two very distinct things.

True, but he's got some serious influence on the direction of the program.

He's been their chief engineer since mid 2000s. Iron Duke existed in the 80s.

Camaro Chief Al Oppenheiser: Next-Gen Camaro Will Not Offer A Four-Cylinder

In a bid to offer a more refined, efficient, and nimble car that will be competitive not only in North America, but in Europe as well as in other parts of the world, Ford has said it will offer a turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the next-generation 2015 Mustang. This has led to speculation that General Motors will follow suit and offer a four-banger in the next-gen 2015 (or 2016) Camaro.

According to AutoGuide, a four cylinder engine option will not find its way under the hood of the next Camaro, at least not if Camaro chief engineer Al Oppenheiser has anything to do with it.

“We’re not following Ford”, Oppenheiser told AG during the 2013 SEMA show. “As long as they’ll pay me to be the chief engineer, I’m going to fight for every horsepower I can and every cylinder I can,” he said. Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for cars will jump from an average of 27.5 MPG, where it has been since 1990, to 37.8 MPG by 2016. This mandated increase is forcing automakers to downsize engines, some of which have been removing two cylinders while adding forced induction such as turbo-charging. As such, some V8s are being replaced with turbo-charged six-cylinders, and naturally-aspirated six-cylinders have been eschewed in favor of boosted fours.

He also added that downsizing the car or the engine too much will stray too far from what the Camaro is all about, and make people question whether the car should continue on.

“We’ve established what the Camaro is. And if the Camaro ceases to become a Camaro, you’ve got to consider, do you take Camaro out in the future.”

And yet you can buy a 4 cylinder 6th gen. I think that was his point.

That was my point.

Al basically said no 4 cylinder Camaro. "We're not following Ford" referring to the 4 cylinder direction..... 6th gen has a 4 cylinder Camaro. So Ford has an electric Mustang concept, Al says no electric Camaro.... we shall see.

Al Oppenheiser also said this. Quote from June 2015 Hot Rod.

HRM: ...is this a performance bubble or will we see performance cars continue to improve over the next few years?

AO: Let's see. You've heard Mark Reuss say many times that Chevrolet has the most capable performance lineup we've ever had at Chevrolet. The things we do on Z/28 and ZL1 with magnetic ride and DSSV dampers. The Corvette has so much technology. We're going to incorporate much more of that to comply with future fuel economy. We're going to always be able to do performance, it's just how you define performance and the tools you have to do that. It may change to more technology-based down the road. Hey, look at it realistically, electric motors provide instant torque. That's pretty cool.

Hmm, maybe he'll be overruled as Fen mentioned. Or he was just playing to the crowd. I've also heard rumors of a C8 electric variant 'Vette which I thought i'd never see either. I just hope we can opt out.

Just asking. If the day comes that electric Ford Mustangs are killing Camaros at the strip are you going to still demand that Chevy make no electric Camaros? If Ford decides on an electric Mustang, that day will come pretty quick.

I'm not demanding anything. I just hope that we get a choice. But hell, I still prefer a manual transmission and I know it's slower.
