Suggestions for getting Cams?

So this is my first Camaro and my first V8 in general how complicated is it to get a cam Upgrade? I’ve heard I need to get a Torque converter and all sorts of mess before I do cams is this true or can I just buy a Cam take it to a shop and tune it?

Also how much can I expect to pay for getting a cam installed on a 6th gen ten speed?

There is only one camshaft in a pushrod, overhead valve motor like the LT1

You'll need the new cam, supporting valvetrain mods (valvesprings, retainers, pushrods, timing chain, lifters, etc.). Might as well do AFM/DOD delete and Katech oil pump at the same time. Plus install labor costs. Plus dyno tune.

Best bet is to speak to a specialist LS/LT shop that will recommend a package for you. Talk to them about your goals with the car (purpose, HP target, etc.) to get the best recommendation. I don't know any shops in Colorado, but some of the most respected shops nationwide are Jannetty Racing, Katech and Vengeance Racing, among many others.

This thread has a lot of info and great pics to give you an idea what the install entails. Granted, this is an LT4, but most of what you see is still applicable to the LT1. You can skip over the supercharger-related posts.

My general rule of thumb is $100 / hp gained
Some mods are better than this rule, but just a guide.

$4500 ?

Any other guesses?!

Yea, I think around that is fair for a cam install + tune, but that pricing doesn't really translate to forced induction. A stock brand new SS will dyno around 400whp +- 20hp, supercharged can safely reach 600whp, so around 200whp increase. It doesn't cost anywhere near $20k to supercharge an SS.

You took the time and math to correct me but NOT answer the man's question?

Btr 220 or btr225 seems to be the interesting options at the moment

Not 100% sure about the LT1 but if you are going CAM might as well get heads.

Ya but he'll have to do drop-ins which is another $1500-$3000 not including cam and heads which can be $6000 by itself.

I honestly think the best advice here is just to call a few pro shops and see what packages they offer.

You must have missed the part where he asked how much it would cost and I pointed out your answer isn't accurate

Yes - if you look at the flow/lift curve you will want to port to take advantage of the added lift. The heads won’t show additional flow above the factory cam lift. Katech will do the ports for 5-600

You don't have to do drop-ins.

His best bet would be to ask this question in the appropriate subforum not here.

I will say this, save yourself some money and get it all done at once. I wish I would have when I built out my 2004 GTO. Do cam, heads, headers, exhaust and a tune.

But seeing you are at elevation, a SC would be a better choice

OP... listen to King and go to "V8 LT1 Engine, Exhaust, and Bolt-Ons" sub forum here - you will get plenty of advise and estimated costs there. Be specific on what you want done and your end goals.
RAMAir02 provided some quality shops if you are looking to get the work done for you.
