ZL1 in freezing temps!
Guys - I have a question for all of you.
My car is supposed to go in to the dealer for the supercharger replacement tomorrow. The temperatures in the morning are as follows: So, it is going to be about 20 degrees in the morning for the next couple weeks, The dealer is 3 miles from my house -- all highway -- 65 MPH How much damage, if any, will I do to the tires (Those damn Goodyears) if I take it? Obviously wouldn't be screwing around. Just dropping the car off before work. |

Since it's a warranty repair, any chance they'd come and get it on a flat bed?

I am not sure I trust a chevy dealership sending some kid and a flatbed out to get my Z. But I appreciate your idea, and it is an option -- if that is the choice I think I will just wait for warmer temps.

just drive with care and you will be fine. I have driven the Goodyears in the 20s and they suck. If you think they are hockey pucks in the 40s, they are much worse with temps in the 20s. You just have to be super gentle with throttle application and cornering. Are you going to cause any damage to the tires? I never had an issue with cracking or chunking. For 3 miles...just be careful.

Do you think the cracking a chunking is from people trying to push their cars in sub freezing temps?

I think the cracking happened at colder temps below 20 when they sit outside and then are driven. These cars/tires have sat outside in the rail yards in colder temps and been fine. Just take it easy because traction will be nonexistent.

When I had my ZL1, I drove it many times in subfreezing temps. Never had any problem if I drove it like any regular car. I didn't punch the throttle, didn't take curves at high speeds, just drove it like I drive my wife's car and had no issues whatsoever.

If if it were my car, I would play it safe and reschedule the SC replacement during a week when the temps will be warmer. Especially if your car isn't your dd.

I'm assuming the car is in a warm garage right? It'll be fine for 3 miles just be very very gentle on the throttle

If you trust your driving skills then you'll be ok.
It's be cold the past week here where I live and I just got the car. Took it out a few times but I know it's not really safe to "get on it" during this kind of weather. Just use basic logic and take it easy. Is the S/C giving you issues? I know there is a recall on it but if it "ain't broke don't fix it" approach may be better. lol

It is in my attached garage at home.
I will just take it easy. The S/C is making some noise, and I want it fixed before I start autocross in the spring. Now that I think about it -- there are ZL1s at the dealer right now sitting outside. I assume just easing along wouldn't cause enough stress to hurt anything. |

If I remember right the problem with the tires being below 20 is that you need to let them heat back up slowly. I wouldn't think you will hurt them, just be careful. Bad enough that you have to have your motor taken apart, don't add body work also.

I am glad they recognize the issue and are correcting it, though.
