More than likely an exhaust leak. As the metal heats up, the gap closes. Now, the hard part is finding it. A shop would have a smoke machine that might help.

It is possible that lifter is going bad and has to pump up, but start with the exhaust.

Seems like a lot of LS motors with age seem to have lifters get a little sticky or bleed down as the oil thins out. I have a 2000 GMC with a 6.0L with 130K miles on it and it will be a little noisy/ hear small tick at startup. I know these motors are really different, but I've done a few things that have helped stop it on the truck. I have done the seafoam and that helped a bit, but I've also added a little bit of marvel mystery oil and then the Lucas oil additive and it doesn't do it any more. Anyone have any other experience trying that on the LS3 or L99? Kinda old school, but Might give it a try to see if it helps.

If the ticking/knocking sound is coming from the rear, you may have the dreaded "Trunk Monkey".
Hopefully that is the root of the ticking.

Sounds like the dreaded afm lifters. Some Early L99s Have/had faulty lifters that would leak down. Tic tic tic on startup until the lifters pumped up. Usually within a few seconds. Doesn’t do it every time but randomly. Some had there’s replaced under warranty...me being one of those.

Bingo, finally the answer. L99's are well known for lifter noise at start up.
My early 10 L99 lifters have never made a sound after 11 years. The trick is to
change your oil frequently. I've changed mine 16 times in 62,000 miles.
Also, there's nothing dreaded about it. It does no harm imo.

I had a ticking that was constant. Ended up being a failed lifter that damaged everything else it touched. Hence the new crate engine. It was a slight tick, quieter that an exhaust manifold leak in my case.

Maybe nothing, but what oil filter are you using?
Thinking a cheap filter and drain back valve inside leaking?
Corrections welcome.
