I'm thinking of ordering this one, so the phone is in plain sight (especially for navigation). My iPhone4 is not compatible with Apple Carplay unfortunately.

Not for me. I use this magnetic mount and it's perfect. Does not block my shifter or the mode switch, but I have the A8. The "neck" is flexible so I just bent it out of the way.

Yes, you buy the mount then a holder if you want one. I don't like the proclip holders so much so I use a Scosche magnetic surface mount stuck to the proclip. I can just slap my phone on the magnet and go.

Yep! Still works fine and I'm cheap!!
I've avoided the software updates that bog down the phone.

I use one of these....cheap and works good. I stuck it on the dash, just to the right of the touch screen.

Now that's without a phone case on right? Does the magnet cause any problems with the phone? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The magnetic mounts require you to either stick a thin metal disk to the back of your phone, slip it in your case (if it's thin) or put it on the outside of a thick case to work. I found a case that has it integrated so I didn't have to stick anything to my phone:
