First oil change at 500 miles?
Okay folks I couldn't find the specific forum for this question so if there is one please do not hesitate to let me know.
I have heard in both forums and camaro youtube videos but do not see it in the manual...are we supposed to get the first oil changed at 500 miles? I've looked over the manual and do not see it being done at 500 miles but at 7,500. Was my sales associate supposed to have informed me of this? If anyone can let me know where to find this info I'd appreciate. One can always teach an old dog a new trick. Thanks! |

I did mine at 500 miles because I am old school. But we know how that turned out

I tried to follow the recommendations in the Performance supplement for the 1LE so I changed the oil at 500 miles and again at 1,500 miles. I also changed the differential fluid at 1,500 miles. Finally, I kept the engine below 4k rpms for the first 500 miles.

there is nothing in there about changing the oil at 500 miles, and there is nothing in there about keeping below 4k RPM's for the first 500 miles. It says to stay below 4k rpm for the first 1500 miles and nothing about the 500 miles oil change. The document you're referring to is the "track preparation guide" which is not an official document that comes with a camaro when you buy it. Not trying to say what is right or wrong here, just making sure I'm not missing anything in the performance manual, or if the performance manual has been updated. |

That being said the car belongs to the owner and the owner can do whatever he feels is appropriate. Here is a link to the 2019 Track Preparation Guide. https://en.chevroletclub.net/manual_...ad.php?id=1736

From my owner's manual
Starting and Operating New Vehicle Break-In Caution Follow these recommended guidelines during the first 2 414 km (1,500 mi) of driving this vehicle. Parts have a break-in period and performance will be better in the long run. . Avoid full throttle starts and abrupt stops. . Do not exceed 4000 engine rpm. . Avoid driving at any one constant speed, fast or slow. . Do not drive above 129 km/h (80 mph). . Avoid downshifting to brake or slow the vehicle when the engine speed will exceed 4000 rpm. . Do not let the engine labor. Never lug the engine in high gear at low speeds. With a manual transmission, shift to the next lower gear. This rule applies at all times, not just during the break-in period. . Do not participate in racing events, sport driving schools, or similar activities during this break-in period. . Check engine oil with every refueling and add if necessary. Oil and fuel consumption may be higher than normal during the first 2 414 km (1,500 mi). . To break in new tires, drive at moderate speeds and avoid hard cornering for the first 322 km (200 mi). New tires do not have maximum traction and may tend to slip. . New brake linings also need a break-in period. Avoid making hard stops during the first 322 km (200 mi). This is recommended every time brake linings are replaced. . Should the vehicle be used for racing or competitive driving (after break-in), the rear axle lubricant must be replaced beforehand

Oil changes are the cheapest insurance you can buy. Change early change often. Drive it like you stole it.

You cannot argue this point. If all is done correctly

376 cubic inches of fun

My first first oil change on my Gen5V8(DIY): 1500.
After that, I followed the engine life indicator more or less, which for Gen5 meant 1 year or about 15,000 miles using Mobil 1. In years that I was on track to exceed 15,000, I changed the oil mid-season at 8,000 or so. After 80,000+ miles and 12 years, oil consumption is still negligible. Changing oil at 500 miles seems too early if you are concerned with wear particles. Go 1,000 or more, or else you'll be worried into doing it again after 1,500. LOL |

Y'all thanks for all the input. Definitely something to think about ... especially the "cheap insurance" part of it since I'll be keeping her for a LONG time!
