Cam install

I just read on a different site that a cam install cannot be done without removing the engine. Is that correct?

I'm iffy on this but I believe it was specifically oil pan removal that was required?

I believe it's because the LT1 oil pan and timing cover does not utilize gaskets like the the LS engines. RTV silicone sealant is used. The dry-sump pan needs to be dropped to remove the cam phaser gear and timing chain. It's going to be expensive to drop a cam in these things.

The pump sits in front of the timing gear, the Camaro is wet sump. It is not crazy hard, but yep harder than a LS engine which was candy.

You could just lift the wngine using a sling or hoist to gain the required clearance instead of completely removing it.

Pricing on cam installs in the LT1 has been discussed before, but if you are going to have a shop do this install, it might make more sense to go with a supercharger for the money and amount of power you'd get.

If you do the install yourself (because you have the tools, engine hoist, and garage), cam is still a good option. It isn't a one day, drink some beers with your buddies job anymore.

This is the largest part of the reason I went SC. A bigger cam will wield (That was a typo of yield but I like it!) more max HP but always at the expense of low-end torque, and always requiring all the other goodies needed to further improve flow NA and take full advantage. Once you go FI none of those flow issues matter near as much and it can become a one-mod-and-done operation with no sacrifice in driveability.

But that lopey idle sure is nice...

Getting a new cam in my camaro.... labor is twice the amount of parts. But it'll be fun!

Well. Depends what parts.

I paid double the amount for parts than I did labor. Haha

There are pluses and minuses with either approach, but yes, a cam can be installed without pulling the engine, although pulling out the radiator and dropping/resealing the pan can be a challenge.

My cam job will be starting on Saturday. I think I am just going to pull the motor. But mine is going to be a bit involved so I it is best for me to pull it. I don't plan on losing any torque, anywhere. I have a buddy that has done a bunch of cam swaps and he has decided to pull the motors. He did it both ways and according to him, it is just faster.
