This. Shit is garbage in the cold. As long as I live in canada and drive long distances in the winter, ICE it will be. Stopping for 30min to recharge in -32 is idiotic.

Someone did an LS swap to a Tesla Model S, so that's not impossible.

I still remember living in Fort McMurray and driving to Edmonton, and there is a good sketch of 200+km without any gas stations or charging. And I think the drive from Fort Mac to that point is already 50 km or so.

And I think 30 min charge time in winter is a bit optimistic. It is assuming you have a coffee shop nearby to hop in and stay warm. If you have to rely on the vehicle to provide you heat, the charge time can significantly increase.

Another important thing to consider is that you probably want to have some good amount of reserve in your fuel tank/battery in winter. I was told to never have less than 1/4 tank of gas in case I run into a ditch and have to wait for rescue, which can take hours. I feel like EV might have a slight edge in surviving a hard plow into the snow, but ultimately, I am not sure how long it will keep you warm if you are already low on battery.

So yeah, lots of problems when you want to do "truck stuff" with it, though it could work as short-distance moving/delivery vehicles in urban areas where the shorter range is NBD.

Owning an EV for any sort of highway driving in Canada, especially in winter, is a good way to kill yourself. It amazes me people's priorities are to save a little tiny bit in cost vs the time it takes to stop and recharge.

It amazes me that people are focusing on fringe-cases like living in the white, cold north that is apparently a barren wasteland.

EV's are not for everyone, and they aren't for everywhere (for now). We get it.

This. If you can't make an EV work for you then don't buy one.

No kidding

I am a contractor that has a newish pro master and when it’s time to replace my current van I would seriously consider getting an Ev version

It would work really well for me since I rarely drive more that 75 miles a day

debating electric vehicles is funny because there’s always the people that say the problem is I won’t be able to tow 20,000 pounds uphill with a 500 mile range and be able to recharge it in 65 seconds flat

Cases like yours are a wonderful use-case for EVs right NOW - not 5 or 10 years from now...right now.

I hope it works out for ya! That modular storage system they came up with is pretty clever.

I'm a big fan of this new Silverado EV and I've been a true fan of the outgoing Avalanche models, best riding pickup GM ever made. Avalanche's around here still command a higher price point than similar year Silverado's and this was well before the pandemic induced used car prices.

That’s why, believe it or not, commercial vehicles are more of a heated segment for EVs than personal vehicles.
  • Amazon invests in Rivian and orders 20,000 vans from them
  • Stellantis announces that Amazon also ordered thousands of ProMaster EV vans from them
  • GM creates an entire company (BrightDrop) to manufacture and sell commercial vans and announces high volume orders from FedEx and Walmart
  • GM leads with a work truck version of Silverado EV
  • Ford offers a Lightning Pro model
  • GM confirms that they are working on HD commercial BEVs

On one hand, I technically have to hop onto highways just to get to other cities of GVA, so any highway is a stretch. If you move strictly in the more populated areas of West Coast then an EV should be fine.

But on the other hand, I do know someone who works in Fort Mac that drives to and from Calgary every 2 weeks when he goes on and off shift. That's an 8-hour drive on the highway, so the fringe use case also isn't as uncommon as you"d think.

The potential worry is that if we will have that choice in the future.

If they have a competent fleet management system, you won't see it happen, especially in urban areas where it's all stop-and-go but the actual distances aren't long. They also would probably still keep some ICE delivery vehicles around for when they need to deliver goods to areas that are less populated.

I know a taxi company on Vancouver Island called Current (clever name) that uses Tesla as their taxis. I have ridden one and it's not too bad. If they can run taxis in urban areas and still stay competitive compared to the traditional taxis companies, then I'd think couriers will also be able to figure it out.

I think a lot of those companies are ordering EVs as their last-mile delivery vehicles, which are the ones that send the goods from their local distribution facility in the area to people's homes, so the range concern isn't a massive issue if they have enough EV vehicles and good fleet management.
