What a great comparison. I think all the questions were answered. Except one in my mind.
If the Mustang GT = the SS the gt500 = the Zl1 the gt350 = the Z/28 the gt350r = ????? I feel that the 350r advantage was weight saving, no back seats and a lot more carbon fiber goodies that it was always going to have the advantage. Been thinking about this since Ford announced the 350 and the R. Also was the build quantity for the 350r, is anyone ever going to see one on the road. I hope so!! |

The GT350 is definitely a very good car. I love the fact that Ford and GM are building cars that rival exotics on the race track. Yep, the GT350 is a bit quicker...but I still think the Z/28 looks better and just has something you can't put into words that the GT350 doesn't have. Kinda like comparing The Fonz and Rocky. Bot Italian, both tough guys, and you know Rocky would kick the Fonz's ass, but we all want Fonzy to win, and he's without a doubt cooler than Rocky.

The GT350 is a great car and it had better beat the outgoing Z28 or that would have been a big fail for Ford.
Comparing the 5 generation to a 6 generation car is fun but it ain't over yet.

Zero regrets. I could've had either car and would still choose the Z/28 over the GT350R, especially at current discounts. People tend to forget subtle details like tires and alignment differences, well within the noise of 1.5 seconds on track. The Shelby runs way more negative camber up front than the Chevy does from the factory. The hype is merely "shiny new thing" syndrome. I may be in the minority, but LS7 over that raspy noisemaker any day.

Just curious....Is there any history of Z/28 tracktimes at Chuckwalla?....It was a good comparison, for sure, with Randy Pobst doing both cars....Will be interesting to see how the GT350R does at other tracks where the Z/28 already has been timed...
...Still, for a 2.68(?)mile track with around a two-minute lap, the difference was very close. |

i enjoyed watching that and the GT350R is definitely a cool car and well done Ford for building it and giving us car guys more choice.
i know a few of us on here like to and have modded our Z28s and it's relatively easy (and proven) to add an extra 100 rwhp and keep good streetability. So the question I have is do you think Ford's Voodoo is capable of getting much more out of it? I know you can supercharge the 5.0 Coyote but the Voodoo seems like it might be a completely different proposition with the very high revving flat plane crank. Andy |

1.16 but who's counting lol. The Z/28 is just a little heavy. Once I'm done with my Z, the GT350R won't win and I'm not touching my motor. Going to put her on a diet. Anyway Good job Ford good job indeed. Congrats to whoever get one be it Z/28 or 350R. I know which one I'm sticking with

THIS WAS THE TOP DOG GT350R
Remember guys, this was the GT350R they tested against the z/28, not the GT350. there is a big difference, and against a car that is almost 3yrs old.

Haha, I was trying to think of a good underdog analogy. I guess the Fonz vs Rocky wasn't the best choice. Now that I think about it, yeah, everyone would pick Rocky. Okay, maybe I should've stuck with, we all want the Z/28 to win. But too bad, it didn't.

The thing that always gets me about these videos, is how they put down the reigning champ (Z/28) when the new kid comes along (GT350). All the Motor Trend videos last year, they praised just about everything Z/28. Now, they spend all the driving time in the Z/28 pointing out the flaws.

I guess the 65~ weight difference and more aggressive rubber on the R, gave the regular gt350 the edge it needed to beat the Z on the track.
I will still take my Z all day any day of the week. I don't know if we will see a return Z. The Z wasn't competing against anyone, it was just being itself, doin' track things the way it knew how. Ford had a defined benchmark to beat and that they did, only with the R model from what I have seen. Chevy could easily respond but I think it could be left knowing that ford had to go to some lengths to get close so no need to give ford another benchmark. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
