Shift lever rattling under acceleration

Hey guys,

I have a V6 manual trans that has begun rattling under hard acceleration. The shift lever makes an annoying sound and its driving me nuts! If I grip the lever tightly it will stop rattling, but as soon as I let go it goes back to rattling. It almost sounds like a loose screw.

Any thoughts?

The car is under warranty. Take it to the dealer and have them look at it ASAP. Also, this belongs under the Problems topic thread.

Every stick I ever owned rattled some including my 2016RS 3.6 6m. mine happens around 4k and I assume it's from the motor and tranny wanting to twist under hard acceleration. Doesn't bother me, I wish there was more feel through the shift lever.

My car does the same rattle noise. Feels like something is loose . Metallic noise. But mines does it while going at higher speed. I complained and taken the car multiple time. Had Dealer employees even mechanic get in with me to ride the car so they could hear it.

Supposedly GM knows of the problems and don't have a solution yet. Document ID 4419504 - # PIE0355.

It also drives me crazy :(

Our last two CA5's were manuals. No rattles ever in all the years we drove them. Both were the Hurst short throw options, though, so maybe that is why there weren't rattles.

I have a 2007 Miata that used to do the same thing. There was a tiny screw under the plastic cap on the shifter (the cap that has the numbers printed on it) that had worked itself loose. I pried the plastic cap off, found the screw, and put it back in its hole and tightened it up. I then superglued the plastic cap back down.

Now, I don't necessarily recommend you start prying parts off your car already, but you may be experiencing a similar issue.

Try unscrewing the shift knob (assuming it will unscrew like just about every other shift knob) and drive around with it off. If you don't hear the rattle anymore, then the knob is the problem.
